The MTA has several highly underutilized transit hot spots with low density housing, only poor people, warehouses, etc.
Those areas are the most valuable land from a development point of view because they have a short commute to other boroughs and especially midtown/downtown
Whenever a developer is moving in they promise "mixed use sustainable density URBANISM URBANISM JANE JACOBS" and basically everyone agrees no questions asked because they're expecting it to be the fantasy of dense high rises.
But instead what they build is these atrocities where there's attached cage storage, cage ramps, cage lots, cage cage cage cage cage and it's no better utilized than it was before, it's the same density or worse, it's just that the people moving in are upper middle class cagers and not poor cagers, but it's still a fucking traffic sewer and there's a hundred cages per building gathering dust because some asshat YIMBY decided that this is a good idea
And if you criticize this the URBANISTS screech at you and say "why are you a NIMBY development is good" when they're not actually developing anything, all they're doing is building a shiny new traffic sewer but god forbid you talk back to a smug entitled YIMBY because that makes you an ok boomer or some shit
