i'll post my caloi aluminum again soon, replaced the fork, seatpost and going for some discs at the front maybe.
also learned how to properly setup cantis so i threw the y straddle on the trash, where they belong

how it masks the welds at the chainstay? no one is going to flip your bike over to inspect it, but what the eyes don't see the heart can't feel i guess

did those little holes appeared before? they do look sketchy, but with some frame protector or just dirty from the chain it will be fairly hidden underneath

The welder didn't fill the pinholes for some reason. There'll be a lot of rust on the other side and very thin metal there, but the acid bath probably has stripped that rust now and the inhibitor should, well, inhibit it.
I thought about filling them with epoxy or filler but that would just be cosmetic and i couldn't be bothered lol.

Yes the frame might fold in half one day but lots of things might happen.

yep
100 nzd cash (65 US$) to acid strip and paint a std colour
the guy was really nice. other places wanted way more.
I don't have time sadly but I was going to try find a panel beater who'd clear coat it for cheap when they do a car, would make it look a bit better

I'm gonna try install the headset with a block of wood and a hammer. Might be a bit hard as the powder wrapped in and ideally it'd be faced.

I got it off before with this pipe i cut some notches in.

the cam wheel for the brake was missing but i cut one out of a pulley that should work

A lot of the rocky mountain frames have aftermarket decals.. I want to strip this one and make it 'like new'. It's kindof nice though having a 29 year old bike with mostly original paint.

The scars in the first pic and similar get clr'd and painted with acrylic and it works pretty well but I need to take a wire brush to this and would need to take it apart completely to get it all and to repaint it again so I don't want to do that until the spring. Someone suggested just oiling it in the first thread too.

Incredible how my 18 year old mountain bike looks like any brand new high tech 2019 bike after a rough season but add an extra 50% to the age and everything looks shit and degraded and unbranded nonsense
People say the early 2000’s were a dark age of mountain biking but it’s pretty good progression per decade compared to 2009-now

rebuilt the hubs with new cones and new ball bearings

The derailer cage is too short for the drivetrain, odd as those were the original parts from when i bought it. Maybe she just didn't cross chain. I'd be fine with that but i'm going to leave this bike at my bach and say anyone can ride them, so it's probably not ok.

hopefully i can finish tomorrow and leave town with it on monday. Not looking forward to setting up cantis.

I don't think surface rust is a real issue.
But yeah, fish oil would be the best man. I spray my rusty towbar with that occasionally and it looks quite good for a while.
Touch it up too if you want. It doesn't really matter. I like the original paint thing too. I wouldn't have repainted if I didn't absolutely have to.

What happened to my frame I think was it got sprayed with salt for a decade when it lived in Japan on the coast, probably outside. It's not normal for rust to really even matter.

If you want to though, I reckon powdercoating and chemical stripping is awesome if you can find a good place.

Rode for the fist time on a modern mountain bike just recently. It's hard to tell if the confidence it gives you is waiting to bite you in the ass. I mean downhill on gravel on skinny 26" tires you are fighting to keep them from digging in, with plus size and larger tires it's like you are gliding over the top, but I wonder if they are just waiting to dig in and it will be harder to notice/control because you are not feeling it as much.
