There are still gaps in the rail today. Wheels locking up and forming flat spots does more to damage wheels than going over rail joints

I don't think type of joints matter, if speed is lower than 130 km/h.
If speed is higher, you obviously want to weld it, because at such speeds you can actually crack a wheel, and nobody likes flying chunks of steel flying at 180 km/h

You oil/grease the flanges, cap'n. I did work at a terminal for a time where we would put used motor oil on top of the rail when kicking cars so that they wouldn't hang up on the lead. You'd pull a track out and pour a bit on top and you'd be good.

Not on that lead you couldn't! There were just a couple bad curves going into some tracks, and adding a little bit of lubrication made all the difference. Especially on the empties.

I don't anymore though. I changed crafts because I saw the writing on the wall. They hate fast switchmen these days so I took my talents elsewhere in the company. I still love switching cars, though. It's a riskier and more dangerous version of billiards and golf.
