I think your best bet would be to swing by bike shops to see if there's any new old stock stuff their manufacturers have. Trek/Giant/Specialized/etc all make extra parts for warranty purposes, so you might be able to snag something for cheap if you don't mind that it might look like it belongs on another bike.

Also wtf walmart bike has a carbon fork and do they even have walmart in europe

Phil is ok. I think that Royce made a 36h rear with Ti bits and bobs and a robust pawl design. Tho now that I think about it, so does WI. For ultra bling, Grand Bois SLFQRs are nice, but make Phil look cheap. I bet you could build some crazy stuff wheels with them. Dia Compe Ene Touring are good, as are SunXCD's hubs. VO hubs get fucked up by weather.

but i remember a tutorial by a cyclocross champion and he showed how you had to jump onto the bike to mount it quickly and you better not miss or you would crush your balls. so the saddle should be pretty high and not the mounting process too easy?

i know there are other ways to determine the saddle height like if you sit on the saddle and put your heel on the pedal you should have your leg be straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke. but if you move your hips then that could affect the measurement.

Your hips aren't supposed to move at all when pedaling, that's usually a sign of a saddle too high. The "straight leg with heel on pedal" is a good rule of thumb. The "hip height standing next to bike" is not, since frame size and BB height would affect this greatly.
Of course as with every rule of thumb, you then have to ride and micro-adjust to find the sweet spot.

i get that but how do you go from there to find the sweet spot if you don't have all the sport science equipment and coaching. and with these long ass saddles it depends on where you sit on it and if you can get your heel in the right spot on the pedal.

How much leeway can I afford with spoke lengths? Spoke calculator says I need 253mm, old spokes that were on the wheel (before previous owner robbed it of 32/36 spokes) are 256, I can get a good deal on 250mm spokes.

Very roughly yes, but not really. It depends on your bottom bracket height, but also a hip spans a too large vertical range to use as an accurate reference point.
Use it as a starting point and the adjust with the leg extension rule. Then you can take note of exactly what point on your hip to use as a reference point for next time.

Any recommendation on wide 26" rims with brake track?

It still wears out, the tape becomes brittle and the glue melts. Better tape will last longer than cheap stuff, but it's not really a concern since most cycling enthusiasts replace their tape at least once a year.
Since it uses no adhesive, silicone tape might last longer. It would definitely protect your frame better than electrical tape.

gaffer tape seemed like another good idea (if it were actual professional gaffer tape that leaves little to no residue) but this looks even better

german amazon has black and transparent tesa 56064, 19mm x 2.5 meters for €6.53. leaning toward the transparent, the tape looks like it's white but translucent, my bike is white, probably a different shade of white but the tape might look inoffensive since it's translucent. i only need to wrap the attachment points because i have transparent tesa 56349 extra power transparent tape where the rest of the bag will rub against. but i don't really recommend putting tesa 56349 on your frame because it's awfully tedious to apply if you want a nearly invisible result with proper adhesion at the seams and it's almost impossible to put it on complex shapes like aero fork blades and curved chainstays without getting a bubble in problem areas (the bubble is really small and not really visible except under close inspection but can be triggering if you have ocd). a good paint protection film is supposed to breathe so that small bubbles will disappear on their own. maybe the rational choice if i'm being budget conscious would be to wrap some of the leftover tesa 56349 around the attachment points but i'm worried if when i remove it and clean up the residue i might scratch the tape underneath and it seems you can't "polish" this tape it will just go dull over time.

Okay some nigger stole my bike last night.

Now I'm in the market for a new bike. I was riding a Giant ATX 2 hardtail, and it was fucking great. Loved it.

I would like to upgrade to a full suspension bike but it's a lot of money, what are some good full suspension MTBs that are under a grand?

I spent $550 AUD on the Giant. I'm willing to spend $700 or $800 on a new one. Is it smarter to buy a low end full suspension MTB, or get a better hardtail?

I'm thinking if I spend a bit more I'll get hydraulic brakes, which I want. I don't like the responsiveness of cable brakes anymore, especially since they stretch. What else am I getting for my money?

I also know nothing about gears, derailleurs or that kind of thing.

so I bought a collectible bike dirt cheap, will probably have to take it apart and get new nickel on some rusted steel bits but aside from that should I keep it as-is and put it on display or actually bother to make it ridable which would require some new bits non-optional for safety and some optional bits for comfort like new planetary hub and modern lights

What do you guys think of the salsa timberjack? Test ride it and it seemed fun and comfy. I'm worried that the 27.5 has too wide of tires, that I'd be running essentially a glorified fatbike.

The deore one with dropper post is 995 usd on sale at the LBS. I haven't owned a proper MTB since the early 00s.

It's mostly xc trails around here but the city park has a huge mtb park. I also have a new rail trail.

I ride road, not even gravel so this is new ground for me.

the inner tube should hold the air so start by replacing or patching the inner tube. there are some things you can do to the tire but i can't tell from the pic if you need it, the inner tube isn't poking out, just trim those loose ends.

a lot of oldfags/racers seem to prefer not having the nut on, the nut is supposedly only good for holding the valve in place during the initial installation process, and then if you tighten the nut so that it won't rattle then it can pull on the valve stem and not allow the inner tube to flex and then you have a higher risk of getting a puncture

and for example michelin airstop a1 has good reviews on german amazon but not on american amazon. maybe they had an older batch but see the highlighted text in pic related, maybe it has to do with the nut pulling on the valve stem, or maybe his rim tape is bad and the spoke pokes through i don't know.

i haven't tried riding without the nut but if i tug on the valve there is enough flex to bang it into the edges of the hole like maybe if i slam into some raised cobble section of the road or exit a driveway that has a bit of a curb to it. rattling is supposed to be an issue especially with deep section wheels with valve extenders. there's pic related trick but i think it looks kinda bad so i would rather put some tape around the valve stem.

I have a problem with my 105 R7000 front derailleur. On the biggest 2 sprockets the chain is rubbing on the FD but my limit screw is already as far out as possible, I can only move the FD further inwards which only makes it worse ofc. This is not the first FD I installed but it's the first braze on FD and the frame it's on is new.
How can that be? I can't move the FD further away from the cranks, the limit screw is as far out as it can be

I have a road bike with rim brakes. I got 4800 miles on stock pads with some life left. I only ride the road bike in dry weather and tend to not use the brakes much. I have a commuter with discs that eats pads up in about 2000 miles riding in the shit, and using the brakes far more than the road bike.

Run them until you hit the wear bars and replace. Keep the rim clean.

Assuming nothing else has changed check your cable tension. Can you force the FD out further with your fingers? With no tension the FD should sit on the smallest ring(closest to the frame) At that point the lower limit screw will set the position. Let the cable loose so it sits on the lower limit screw then give the cable a bit of tension. See if it works on the big ring after.

I wasted about 90 minutes a few months back setting up a triple. It would not shift into the big ring. Got a longer BB and the same issue. Let the FD sit on the lower limit and that fixed it. I was running out of cable pull to set it on the big ring because I had it set somewhere between 1st and 2nd.

Hey guys, I recently took this early 2000s Specialized off my cousin's hands. Everything is fine about it, except the disc brakes are rubbing on the back wheel. Take the wheel out and wedge a tire lever or similar between the pads to try to push the pistons back a bit. You don't want to use a screwdriver or something too hard because you might mess up your pads. This'll give you a bit more clearance to adjust the position of the caliper. If the brake feels spongy and loose the first time you pull it then progressively gets better, you have air in your line and should bleed the brake. For this, you're best off just bringing it to your LBS where they'll do the rest of the adjustments as well if they're worth a damn.

So I assume you are running a triple, and using the term sprocket correctly (to refer to chainrings, not cassette cogs)?
Since it's not only rubbing in the big ring but also the middle ring, it doesn't sound like a limit screw issue (if you want to be sure, you could remove the limit screw entirely). Sounds like you just need to add some cable tension.
Also check the height of the FD, and check that the FD is straight (aligned with the chainrings).
Park Tool's online repair blog has a good article on front derailleur adjustment.

Is it a tubeless ready rim and tire? Has it always done that or was it holding air before? Sealant dries up and has to be replaced, so if it's been a few months, try new sealant. And if your bottle of sealant is old, it might have gone bad even in the bottle. You could also try re-tapeing the rim (Stan's tape is good). I like Trek/Bontrager sealant.

H60 seems to be 2x8 compared to the other 2x9s, and iirc x9 is now the baseline for decent quality in a new bike
Then it's between flat mounts and carbon fork, if you suspect you'll want to upgrade to disk brakes later then get the contend, otherwise I'd get the domane. There might be a long term cost difference if you need to replace the carbon fork before an aluminum fork, but I can't really speak to that

Are you able to get the tyre mounted on the bead (usually popping when you pump it up)? Is there sealant in there?

Most of the time a tyre alone is not perfectly airtight. You need sealant.
That said, if you can't get the tyre seated, if the tyre goes on too easily (it should be a little bit of a struggle, usually) then you might need another layer of rim tape.

The Domane is more laid-back, with the other two in the middle. One really nice thing about the Domane is that it has clearance for 32mm wide tires, whereas the rest only have clearance for 28 or maybe only 25 in the case of the Merida, so you can put wider tires on and improve ride quality if you have shitty roads or if you ride on dirt. I'd go with that.

The answer really depends on your body (leg length, torso length, arm length) and the geometry of the bike. Usually it's better to go smaller because you have more options for correcting fit, but it's best to ride both and then decide.

road cycling tires.
i have always used cheap tires, for the past 4 years i had been on conti ultrasport 2. and after reading a bunch of stuff like "tires are basic upgrade" i decided to put a pair of gp5000 and see what was it all about. so today i swaped a pair of beaten and used ultrasports for gp 5000.

am i crazy? dont have a powermeter to give cientific info, was just on feeling. i was ulsing 23mm ultrawide on the front and 25mm, the gp's are both 25mm

so.. what do you guys think, havent really tested cornering (did a 65kmph descent but without pushy curves)... and i dunno bros, bike ujst felt smoother with the ultrawides.. i did swap rotation direction of the front wheel (cone bearings, did it to match logos spinning direction of both hubs... dont think its that,bearing where serviced a month ago....

double check the air pressure. depending on how chonky you are you could go all the way up to 110-120 psi. it might just be placebo or that you haven't gotten used to them or that they haven't been worn in yet. the gp 5000 have had good test results by bicyclerollingresistance, aerocoach and they're popular for a reason, they're a great allround tire, some tires save a few watts but puncture more easily and don't last as long.

Feeling isn't a very good measurement. Sometimes I'll feel slow as shit and then find out I set a PR, and sometimes I feel like some kind of god and then I'll see I was way off. That said I had GP4Ks once, and they were trash compared to the Veloflex Masters and Vittoria Open Corsas I normally run on that bike. They punctured all the time and weren't particularly fast. Chucked em after three rides.

Five punctures in three rides, all on fairly nice roads and MUPs. Small flints would just go right through them. They just weren't good tires. Tho they were easy to mount on my rims. The open tubulars are no fun.

if the damage was done just on that one short downhill, then you were just unlucky.
any unusual sounds/feels on braking, you should forsake momentum and time concerns and come to a full stop asap to figure out what's up. one lock-up-the-brake quick stop is way better than light braking all the way down a hill in terms of damage. but since you said it was just a short downhill, the damage may have been unavoidable -- bad luck.

Nah I was running the clincher version. Can't be bothered with tubulars anymore. Supposedly there's now rim tape that actually holds the tires on well enough so that you don't have to deal with gluing, but with some of the descending that I do I wouldn't risk it. Open tubs + latex tubes is good enough on my skinny tire racerboi bike. I'm going to move to tubeless though, probably Specialized Turbos or Vittoria Corsas.

Need to change my chain. I don't know the exact wear, but it doesn't feel fresh anymore after almost 4000 km this year alone.
Bought the bike in 2016, but used it sparsely until this year, so I would say the chain has 5000 km mileage.

Which 10-speed chain should I go for my Deore XT groupset?

I bought a cheap tool to remove the links, but I think installing a link will be hard with it, so I thought about SRAM chains with those easy locking mechanisms. Shimano doesn't offer those with their 10-speed chains.

when researching single speed chains i've read bad things about sram like they start rusting pretty fast. kmc is good but shop around because availability and pricing is hit and miss. the high end chains can probably cost $20 but a mid tier chain is more like $10-15. some kmc chains are selling for way more than that just because of availability issues.

I ordered a Sunrace freewheel online. I was sent a freewheel that says 'Monsoon' on the package and on the freewheel itself. It has the same amoung of cogs and tooth range as what I ordered, and it requires the same freewheel tool as a Sunrace. It's just labeled as Monsoon rather than Sunrace. Some web searches turn up almost nothing. What is Monsoon? Is it an alternate branding for Sunrace products, or is it some entirely separate company and the seller just sent me a Monsoon instead of Sunrace since they're similar products, or what?

that's for taking the chain on and off quickly, but not for installation. bikes have different gearing and wheelbases, so they need different lengths. so all chains come long and you use the tool to size it to your bike, THEN you use the quick link for ez off and on.

I used to ride heavily and actually built the muscle to ride with the bullhorns slammed with a horizontal stem. I tried riding it that way after a year of not really touching it and I thought was going to die. Had to raise the bars 4 inches. which is why I got the areo bars, because I was really starting to notice the wind. Ive got an above average commute (11mi) and strong winds could mean being late.

General rule of thumb.. you are probably over-tightening small bolts and under-tightening large bolts. So just tighten it more. There's always a chance of stripping a bolt, but a new seatpost is cheap if you do. Serious home mechanics use torque wrenches but I don't bother.
Usually after a saddle install I try to push it down with all my weight to test it out. Not while riding, by standing next to it and jumping up to put all of my weight on it

I ordered a training jacket for cycling, went outsides for a short round (20 minutes).
Jacket is all right, but the fit is not perfect.
What I have noticed though is that I feel better using normal sneakers with the flat pedal instead of using those clipless shoes with clip (pedal is Shimano EH-500 with both flat and clip).
I feel like I can generate more power and I can adjust my feet accordingly.

Yes. The breaker cable requires a cable hanger if you want to use cantilever brakes. If you change the stem to one without an integrated cable hanger, you will need to add one. Google either "quill stem cable hanger" or "fork crown cable hanger.
You will probably need to recable the brake. If your stem is too low only the fork crown hanger option will work. V brakes are simpler and require no hanger

It's aluminium all the way through. A poorfag bike but with all the comforts.
I don't care about the upstroke, I had picrelated on my previous bike and didn't miss it for a second. Btw they chew through shoes. I'd wear cycling shoes purely to complete the look. Lycra is too convenient and available to pass on.

Chain tensioner. It looks like yours is one that mounts the same way as a derailleur would. It also looks like something is missing, usually there's a single jockey wheel or pulley sort of thing.

thanks. my friend who passed away recently built it for me and so i can't ask him questions. it's on a mountain bike frame so that explains the wheel tensioner. i grabbed the jockey wheel but forgot to grab a screw to secure it so it's lost somewhere. guess i will eat the $45 or whatever it is and get a new one.

is there a reason behind the logo placement on conti 5000 (clincher) tires? the "5000" is almost opposite of the "continental" on the drive side, but not quite. the "5000" on the non drive side is further misaligned. if you include the nearly invisible "grand prix" the placement still doesn't make sense. not a big deal but not very satisfying and how are you supposed to know if you mounted the tire properly or if you stretched it unevenly.

If you're in Europe swing by Decathlon. They have bottom-tier chainset replacements compatible with Shimano. For switching to drop bars without breaking the bank your best bet is getting separate brake levers and keeping the mtb shifters on the tops imho.

It is really tempting, since that PVC-U pipe is somewhat rigid and manufacturer tells it is UV-stabilized. In any case it is just $5 in materials.
I recently have made a parrot perch out of this shit, and 25 mm 12,5 bar pipe holds 100 kg no fucking problem to my surprise. Sure, it flexes a bit, and joints are clearly not happy, but c'mon, carbon shit can't handle 100 kg.

In any case, steering bars are for faggots, you don't need it in order to ride a bicycle. It is just holder for brake levers and flashlight.

You're putting all your force down onto a pedal's axle when you're riding. Seems like putting a clip there would be a serious point of failure. You could just get an egg beater pedal or something that would be super irritating to ride without clipping in, but if someone wants to steal the bike they could always just push it away.

as long as that pin pivots freely, nothing you've done is an issue at all. if the pin was sandwiched-down and pinching the plates so that link is stiff, you put the tool on from the opposite direction this time and poke it like a ¼ twist until the link is pivoting like the others.
you may have to keep dicking around with it but it'll free up pretty soon. most tools have a secondary position to lay the link into just to facilitate this part.

I'm already running the cabling as tight as I can cause I plan on working my stem height down. It's like 15~cm extra each side to reach from where the STI levers would be to the bar ends, and that 30cm is more or less exactly what they left over for the rear derailleur. I'm gonna have a little 3cm nub left when I cut this.

btw the pic is slightly different to what i did, i have the front cable more tucked in and then the rear cable starts in front and passes through it, and the handlebar can turn completely with no contact between the cables

don't know how restricted you are with the cable routing on your bike but if you have the rear cable on the right side of the bar and currently have it pass the left side of the head tube i think you can save more than 3cm by passing it on the right instead
