I guess this would be normal, cause cold air is denser, your tires have more rolling resistance and other small effects add up to you being slower, even at the same power output.

But I am like fucking 15% slower...and I simply cannot explain it.

Stopped by my favorite display on Christmas eve. I think what I need to do for good pictures of Christmas lights is manually set the exposure length. But my camera doesn't support doing that.

I got out for a daytime ride today, and saw quite a few other people riding. Pogies are doing a decent job of keeping my hands warmer. They aren't annoying as I thought they would be.

A very warm winter day spent cruising from town to town on my road bike. Was wearing jeans and a hoodie, pretty comfy. Found a dilapidated cemetery, oldest year I found was 1836. Ate some pizza. Good ride.

A bit windy today so I rode on a creek / golf course close to home. Encountered some open spots on a part of the creek I usually avoid. I think there are random springs over there that create round open spots.

People have gone a little overboard on the hockey rinks in the area. One on a pond across the street from a boarded rink maintained by the city. Three more on the pictured creek in a 2 km stretch. And another one in a flood plain just off the creek which would have required a lot of watering.

Seems fine. Just picked it up because it's what the LBS had, they only wanted like $40 for it. Definitely moves the rear panniers further back when I have them on, so won't have any heel strike issues even with huge bags. It has a really narrow platform up top if that means anything to you.

Back at the end of January I replaced my fat bike rear tire that was flatting all the time. The new tire felt a lot slower, but at the time I thought it might have been my imagination.
But now I'm pretty sure it really is a lot slower. It gets super slow if I let pressure out for better floatation.

I looked back at my activities and as soon as the new tire went on my average speed dropped and HR went up. So I bit the bullet and ordered another one of the tires I originally had on the rear, at least its cheaper now than it was last year since a new model came out. Buying what the LBS happen to have in stock vs what I actually wanted rarely seems to work out.

Now I need to decide whether I want to move that slow tire from the rear to the front. Up front it shouldn't slow me down since it won't carry much weight. I need to move the studs from either the front or rear tire to the new rear. It will be easier to take the studs from the front tire because the rear ones are siliconed in place. And the front tire sidewall is pretty worn, with the casing threads visible in many spots.

I went to change my chain tonight and noticed my cassette was wobbling much more than is normal. When I removed the cassette the freehub fell to the floor in 5 big pieces, a few smaller ones and a whole bunch of little bearings. I think its been like that at least a week or two. Nothing felt out of the ordinary aside from some sloppy shifting on the upper half of the cassette.

I guess I'm riding my other bike tomorrow.

Yup 25c. I tried 32c but it was just a bit too close. Ill move to 28 once i can justify the purchase, I really dont put enough miles on the bike. Im gonna do some light backpacking on this bike though, so soon enough.

No freehub at the LBS so my fat bike is out of action until next week.

I switched fat bike frames several years back to accommodate larger wheels, and still have parts from the old frame that I couldn't give away since Pugsley stuff doesn't fit any other fat bike due to changing hub widths and disc brake spacing. So with a fat fork on my mtb I can put my spare wheel with 3.8" tire on it.

The mtb didn't see much action last winter because I upgraded the drive train to 9 speed without changing the crankset which didn't go well. So I had to track down a 9 speed square taper crank. Then I didn't realize the Troll has a 73 mm bb shell, and the crank didn't fit properly. I got that sorted but must have not picked the correct axle length since the granny is too far inboard making the chain difficult to get on to it.

Excellent weather today. Took the opportunity to do my annual filling in of privacy zone portion of my Strava heatmap. The privacy zone is only applied at the beginning / end of a ride so if you leave the zone at the start and just before the end of the ride, everything in the middle will show up on the personal heatmap.

Upcoming weather is taking a turn for the worse. Moderate to strong wind and below -15C for at least 2 weeks starting Tuesday. Gusts up to 70 km/h tomorrow as we transition to the bad side of the jet stream.

No riding in a week due to -20C and wind.

I must be getting cycling withdrawal since I'm having dreams about riding a bike. Last one was me riding my fat bike around, found a kitten and put it in my trunk bag, then rode switchbacks up a mountain, had to ride back down in the dark with a crappy light, at the bottom I had to ride through an outdoor wedding reception, encountered a security guard with thick southern accent, I tried handing off the kitten but he wasn't helpful. After that the bicycle was suddenly a motorbike which I rode poorly resulting in me waking up.

Replacement freehub didn't come in last week, which is a sure sign it is back ordered at the distributor. I went to see if the other LBS had one in stock, but nope. Their system showed the distributor back ordered until mid-Feb. Had the other LBS told me that I would have just ordered on one ebay and would be getting it by about now. So I ordered one on ebay and should get it late next week. Now that we got more snow I could really use my primary winter bike.

Car wouldn't start so I biked 2 km down to the store in -35.
Layered up a lot and it wasn't bad.
Bus driver almost ran me over on a residential street so I chased him down at the next stop to call him out on it.
He flipped out and started yelling that I was forcing him to choose between breaking the law and running me over. His reasoning being that it's illegal for him to cross the center line to avoid obstacles (it's not) and that I was riding two feet to the left of the huge snowbank on the side of the road instead of as close to it as possible.
Considered reporting him to the transit authority but I ride that route almost every day and didn't want to risk him killing me in revenge next time he saw me.

Some cunt in a Civic screamed shit at me on my way to work yesterday. Basically, got mad because I didn't let them cut in front of me and take my spot as I stopped for a stop sign (muh let me ignore the rules of the road and put you in danger). 5 seconds and they could have passed me on the left safely (not on the right as they tried, as I had gone wide to avoid ice). Anyway, I tailed them until they stopped at their workplace and we exchanged words in the parking lot. Just to make sure they didn't forget, I kicked their door, hard. Also, similar thing happened last year where another stupid cunt (he even had the same shitty cunt type of face, shriveled and bitter) received an offer to have his nose broken, to which he declined by speeding away.

What is it with drivers just having to get in front of you immediately, at all costs? How do drivers not pay attention to road rules (even by being nice and fucking up a 4 way flow) or hand signals? Why do they not fathom that a rider would move left before making a right turn? And why do they get so mad?

The best part is whenever shit like this hapens I can catch up to them for the confrontation so it's not like they are getting anywhere by behaving like idiots.

Can confirm, if you don't sit right in the middle of a single lane road where they can't overtake you, they will 100% try to overtake you, even 20m before a roundabout despite the fact the you want very much not to be squished while they enter the roundabout.

I did a cross-Canada bike tour a couple years back, and I can't even offer an estimate at the number of times cars passed me right before blind corners or hilltops.
Saw a fair number of near misses where they barely made it out of the way as another vehicle came into sight.
Like, holy shit I know all about the cager "ME GO FAST, NOTHING MUST SLOW ME DOWN" mentality, but slow down for all of 5 seconds until you can be sure no one is coming or one day your number is going to be called and you'll kill yourself or someone else.

Yesterday I remembered that a guy I know bought a used wheelset for the same bike I have. Since the rear wheel from that set only fits Moonlanders due to hub size / 28 mm offset lacing, I'm borrowing it from him until my freehub arrives.

I should have bought that wheelset myself when I saw it for sale. It was only $200 and had the wheels with rotors, and nearly new Surly Bud / Lou tires with tubes. About a month after I passed on it, I wore out one of my fat tires which cost $160 to replace by itself.

Sharpened my tire studs today. One of the tires I studded myself using studs from a set of worn out tires, so most of the studs were rounded. To get them good and sharp you just need to flatten off the top with a diamond file. And do it outside to keep from getting nasty toxic carbide dust everywhere.

My HR is always much higher after a big riding gap and today was no exception. Averaged 168 bpm on a 2 hour ride. If it wasn't for the HR monitor I wouldn't even know anything was different since the higher HR doesn't translate to a higher perceived effort.

One side effect I get related to a high intensity ride like today's are nocturnal panic attacks. I don't get them a lot but they do suck.

Wake up suddenly during the night feeling like I'm dying and can't breathe. I'm usually out of bed before I'm actually conscious, and in the first instant it feels like being in a closed space with no exit. I find myself moving towards the door without knowing what the concept of a door is or how they work. By the time I figure out how to use a door knob I'm usually awake enough to catch my breath.

I've had it happen on a bike tour a few times, and having it happen in a tent is much worse.

My rear brake was frozen this morning for the second time this week. Unlike earlier this week bringing the bike inside for a little bit didn't keep it fixed, so there must be a fair bit of water in the housing. I don't like being forced to use only my front brake when riding on ice / snow.

Drained what I could and squirted some solvent in, drained that and added some lube. The rubber boot on the brake had popped off, so I put in back in place. The front tire tosses slush on top of the rear brake caliper so I should make a cover to shield it.

The right-turning driver at (A) waved me (C) through. I rode across the intersection and straight into the front of a ute (B). I was warned by you guys about people who wave you through. I intend not to make this mistake again.

I got the name and number of the ute driver, but
(a) Bicycle network insurance only covers personal injury, not property
(b) If the driver has insurance, it probably won't cover me since I think I'm at fault.

Next step is to get a bike shop to inspect the frame and forks I suppose. The frame is aluminium. I sure hope I just have to replace the wheel.

I think the biggest ones were around 2 feet. Last spring thousands of them were dead and floating upstream. Extra cold winter depleted oxygen in the lake / creek. The water in the city is fed by a very minor creek with many dams. No inflow during the winter as the creek freezes solid upstream of the city. Only water going into the creek this time of year is salty street melt.

Put my fat bike back together only to notice my chainring is trashed. 3 missing teeth with several others just about gone. I had an old ring with a bent tooth, so I straightened it and put it back on. Surly's aluminum rings are quite shitty.

The 36t chainring I had on my fat bike is discontinued, so my only option for a "big" ring is 33t. I think I'm just going to change the granny, which is steel, from 20 to 26t and use that as my main ring, cuz its half the price and steel. There is also a 28t steel narrow wide ring available, but it cost 2.5x as much as the 26t and is for 1X drive trains only.

we've gotten a lot of bike lanes here over the past 5ish years, but they're all just lines painted on the road or sharrows. afaik, there is exactly one bike lane that is cordoned off from the road, it has waist-high little plastic pillars, which I happen to ride for a couple of blocks to work each day.
and today, some asshat was parked in it. just pulled through the pillars at the intersection, pulled up the block halfway, and sat there with the engine running.
he lost a mirror.

I felt it was kind of juvenile afterward. like I saw him there, got annoyed, and was already doing it before I even thought about it yet.
maybe I could have taken a pic of him parked illegally with the plate and called the cops or something? but then, I have no faith in my local PD at all. I just wanted to make sure that he never did it again. I wonder how a ticket for illegal parking and points on his driving record/insurance hike stacks up versus a mirror, dollar-wise. but me doing it "the right way" puts the onus on me for time out of my day and effort when he's in the wrong. anyhow, I doubt he'll do it again so whatevs.

Ordered a new chainring for my fat bike. Bikeman and Universal Cycles have a big selection of small parts you won't find on Amazon, but their shipping to Canada is stupid expensive. I ended up ordering from Modern Bike which was the only one of the 3 that offered the cheap USPS international shipping rate, the other 2 were 3x as much.

Was downright toasty yesterday. 7 - 9C combined with fat bike exertion level meant I could do the entire 2.5 ride without a jacket.

It looks like the warm weather got rid of most of the mashed potato snow on the streets, replacing it with rough ice. That kind of ice is a lot of fun with a studded fat bike, no fun on something like a marathon winter tire, Ice Spikers handle it well as long as you pay attention to rut direction. Too damn windy to go for a ride today though, 70 km/h just makes riding miserable.

I went to the local BMX track to find it full of children going on random directions. It wasn't that bad, I even helped a few of them with mechanical issues but the sheer amount of people randomly stopped in the track was kinda grating me, wish there was some signage or something telling people that having a hill on one end and a "finish" banner on the other has a meaning.

I felt horrible this morning. Huge pressure on my forehead, like a sinus infection but no congestion. Nice stabbing pain in my right eye whenever I move it. While driving today I discovered if I closed my right eye before turning my head it hurt less. Probably no riding until at least the weekend.

Eye medication didn't work. It seems like the eye problem was caused by antibiotics I was taking for a skin infection, took the last one this morning so if that was it should start clearing up soon. At least the eye appointment was covered prov health plan, otherwise my total cost for a toe rash would have topped $200 including the $80 in medication so far.

Definitely seems to been a side-effect of the antibiotic I was on, which also made my knees sore. Eyes started feeling better within hours of ending the antibiotics.

Still fairly red but getting better. At the moment my focus adjustment isn't working, my eyes are stuck at mid to long distance. Can't focus on anything closer than an arm's length, if I want to read anything I have to hold it out as far as my arm can go, or take my glasses off.

I hate when simple tasks get complicated. I'm planning on visiting some trails in another city tomorrow. When I went to put my bike in the trunk of a civic the center seat belt was jammed fully retracted. So I needed to unbolt and remove the rear seat, then unbolt the seat belt anchor to unjam it. Its quite awkward working crouched in the back of a car.

Had a little play in my rear hub, after several failed attempts at adjusting the cone I did the smart thing and used a bench vise to keep the axle from spinning. Much less of a hassle doing it that way otherwise the axle spins while tightening the lock nut loosening the cone. Usually I over tighten the cone so that tightening the lock nut loosens it to where it should be, but that wasn't working for me today.

Nah, was doing about 60km/h to beat a light then hit it as soon as I got back in the saddle. Just terrible timing. I think I was swallowing or something, my jaw isn't usually closed that much. I know where every pothole is, but this one cropped up overnight after a storm.

We didn't get much snow this year so we're already at the ruts melted to bare pavement stage. Its not supposed to get too warm over the next week so we will be stuck with a mix of ice and pavement for a while. I'm going back to my mtb and touring bike as the fat bike isn't much fun in the city without snow.

I might just leave the studded tires off the touring bike and ride it outside town where the roads / gravel is clear. There is a new highway 1 km from the house, but it is the only highway in the city that gets salted because the private operator does things their own way. Every time I road it during a warm patch early in the winter I came home covered in salt powder.

My reynauds kicked in big time after today's ride. I rode with a guy on the creek on the other side of town so I drove over. I had to drive home before changing into dry clothes and warm up. By the time I got home my fingers were completely white and numb. Took a disturbingly long time for the color and feeling to come back.

That's one of the reason's I don't like driving to winter rides, even if I'm warm while riding my body temp crashes 10 minutes after I stop. I need to bring a thermos to leave in the car, drinking something hot as soon as I stop helps.

The other day I noticed the brakes on my touring bike were stuck as I was pulling another bike out. So I decided to give the bike a check since I might use it tomorrow. All 4 v-brake arms, front derailleur and chain were seized from the salt water (the fenders, they do nothing!). The rear brakes weren't too bad, but the front were right fucked.

I pulled all the brake arms off to clean / lube. The rear ones were quick, but the front required a lot of work. I soaked them in solvent for a while. Once I got them starting to move I dipped them in a cup of iso alcohol which really flushed out the gunk getting them back to moving smooth. Then I dripped in some Triflow.

The brakes are Avid SD5, which are a pretty shitty design. They pivot on an internal bushing. There is a minuscule gap about the thickness of 2 sheets of paper through which water can get in and fuck them up. I've had to clean them several times over the years.

The chain needed a lot of work to get working smoothly.

First skinny tire ride on bare pavement is always nice after months of studded tires in the city. I was slipping forward on the saddle. When I looked at the entry in my excel log for the last ride I did on that bike in November, there was a note saying I should move the saddle forward, clearly I didn't get around to it.

First ride on the new Ice Spiker Pro I ordered months ago. I had it mounted for a while but was using a different front wheel on the mtb. Lots of bare pavement around but at this point I'm not going to gamble and fuck myself up just as spring approaches. Its very likely we'll end up with more snow before April anyway, besides the pools of melted water that freeze over night are extra slick. The studs seem to be their noisiest when rolling over a thin broken layer of sand on pavement. Bare pavement isn't too loud, but add a little grit and the volume doubles.

3 days of above freezing highs coming up, so I'll be back on the highway again. Going to try to aim for 100 km on Friday or Saturday. The new highway is giving me a lot more climbing than I normally get around flat city, still pretty pathetic but 3 to 4x normal.

Another decent day, got a honk from the same Smart car as yesterday. There are a few spots on the new highway that kind of suck for riding. You have to merge or exit from the left side of the road. So you have to look for a gap then zip across 2-3 lanes. The merges are worse than the exits since you are stuck between fast moving traffic on both sides, traffic volume isn't too bad so it hasn't been a huge problem yet.

Tomorrow might be ok, but that could change by morning. Late afternoon the wind will pick up to 60 km/h, then snow overnight.

Tackled a pedestrian with 30kmh. He was walking infront of me, right in the middle of the bike path. My bell is very loud and people startle. He got out of the way but then turned and walked right to the other side where I wanted to pass. Rammed him with my shoulder but we both did not fall.

I'm a little shocked how few people were out riding today (judging from Strava). Really nice weather for February. I just did 40 km as my legs were a bit baked from all the other riding I did earlier in the week.

To be fair riding in the city blows at the moment. Lots of water running across roads and a bunch of ice patches on the MUP. I've got a nice dry route to get out of the city.

Stronger wind most of next week so highway rides will likely be miserable.

Beautiful day, 58 degrees and sunny here in Missouri. I've been committed to going and trying to cover all the bike friendly roads and whatnot in my city instead of falling into the same trap of pounding out miles at this 5 mile lake loop by my house. So far it's gone pretty good, cars pretty respectful out here. It helps that the lanes are wide and they have lots of room to get around you even when there is no bike lane.

Wet roads today after some recent snow. Looks like its gonna be sloppy for a while with more snow mixed with warm days. I've been using a hand pump chemical sprayer to hose my bike off after a ride.

Back in 2016 we had a crazy warm winter with little snow and I managed 1,100 km in February alone. That year is still holds my annual distance record. It stayed warm right until December. I managed 2,100 km that November, double my next highest November distance, and triple my average.

Fun riding today with the snow we got last night. Packed down to a nice glaze on the side street so it was somewhat fast to ride on. Then the sun came out and it all vanished from the roads. I might yet get the chance to do some road riding tomorrow. If its sunny in the morning the roads should finish drying.

I noticed my touring bike tire getting softer over the past few days (I'm in the habit of giving the tires a squeeze when pulling out one of the other bikes). Several tiny leaks in the tube only noticeable when submerging in water, didn't look like punctures, maybe rubber deterioration or flaws. So I retired that tube rather than patch it. I like to cut my retired tubes with scissors to be sure I won't mix them up with my good ones.

Today was as good as it gets for this time of year. Roads were completely dry despite having been soaked all week and covered in fresh snow yesterday. Warm enough that I could have rode in shorts, so I was glad I had my lightest weight tights on. Very little until I turned back, then a tail wind.

An interchange ramp I created a segment on didn't open until October last year, but I'm still surprised I'm the only person who as rode it yet. Here in flatsville it is the biggest climb in town.

It shows up on the Strava global heatmap, so someone else must have rode it backwards before it opened.

Saw an autonomous spare tire while I was out for a walk today. Takes a second for your brain to register a vehicle tire rolling down the street by itself. When I got to where it stopped it looked like one of those truck spares held under the bed by a cable. I guess those cables do break. Whoever lost it didn't notice.

Cut the Poseidon out for Twenty Mile ride on Saturday. It was what was called a Red Flag Warning which means sustained winds over 25 miles an hour and risk from fire. In a practical sense I meant that everybody I saw on the road including myself was just eating shit into a 30 mile an hour headwind. All in all though I'm coming off of a knee injury from slipping on the ice I couldn't be happier to be on the bike even if my normal weekend ride is twice that length

Intense sun was enough to melt all the snow on the roads even though it was -2C. Has the interesting side effect that water sprayed on the bike freezes on contact building up big smooth ice blobs. Second time in a week where I was fat biking on fresh snow one day and out on dry roads the next. Got my longest ride of the year in, 76 km.

More snow coming up on the weekend, not going to melt as fast as the last few times. Long range forecast shows sub-freezing daytime highs for 2 weeks. But forecasts change.

About the same temperature as yesterday but the wind made it feel much colder. Had to backtrack to get around a flooded road. This one floods every spring so I shouldn't have even tried going that way. Legs were very stiff by the end of the ride.

Combination of wind and below freezing temperature will make tomorrow a city riding day.

One of life's little pleasures towards the end of today's ride. Came across a long puddle covered in unbroken ice. I went all ice breaker on its ass carving a channel through it with my studded tires. Makes a fantastic sound.

You definitely don't want to do that a puddle any deeper than your tires. Too deep with a somewhat thick ice layer and it restricts the wheel's ability to rotate side to side which can mess up your balance. There is frequently flooded underpass where you can never be sure this time of year whether the ice will support you or break.

Plenty cold tonight so all the puddles will be too thick to break tomorrow.

woke up fairly hung over, rode to the bus stop and found I'd missed the bus.
Shrugged and biked all the way to work, four miles uphill in total.

I got this bike about a month ago and this trip used to take me 45 minutes with a good number of rest stops and having to walk up a particularly steep hill.
Now I can do it in thirty without any stops besides red lights, pedaling all the way.
Feels good to have measurable improvement. And I think it did something for my hangover too.

This is the 3rd or 4th time it snowed after the roads were clear. Most of this should melt off the road by the end of tomorrow. I wish the snow would just fuck off already. I'm tired of cleaning water off my drivetrain.

I went down an alley while I was out and quickly discovered that was a bad idea. Frozen icy ruts hidden by a few cm of powder are a recipe for crashing studs or not.

Finished this stupid 1x flat bar SuperSix build last week but it was raining non stop all month (still rode, just not this) but this weekend it was suddenly sunny and ~68 degrees. Decided to celebrate by taking it for its first ride on a paved trail system that connects two state parks. Nice mountain and lake views, about 35 miles of riding, and not too crowded due to pandemic scare. A good day for sure.

A real shame we didn't get more snow this winter. The few drifts around are nice and hard now so I can ride along the top of them on my fat bike. Spring drift riding is a lot of fun when the drifts are bigger. I hear the lake shore at a nearby lake usually has some nice big wavy drifts.

Today was probably it for fat biking with the most recent snow fading away.

In between storms. There was just enough moisture from the light rain to make hero dirt, but not so much that the trails were sloppy. Nobody dared to brave the storm, making for some nice descent times. Wanted to make it to the pine line but was stopped short by snow drifts about 500ft elevation from the end of the trail. Soon.

With the roads mostly clear and me back on my mtb I've found I need to use my heavier base layer shirt to stay warm. Rolling resistance is one of those factors that messed up my clothing selection. I'm generating much less heat now, than when I was riding the fat bike.

Not too bad here yet and very few cases, though a lot of stuff is finally shutting down tomorrow. I think part of the problem is drivers not having to deal with cyclists often during the winter. Being aware of that I had my headlight and tail light on during the day, but even that didn't seem to help.

Two of the idiots were cab drivers, the middle eastern cabbies seem to be the absolute worst for being constantly fucking with their phone while driving.

Nicest weather all week, BUT I took a rest day. 6 days of riding in a row left my legs pretty sore. The last few nights they were stiff and twitchy making it impossible to find a comfortable sleeping position.

Spent several hours trying to get into a doctor, then get a prescription before things get anymore bogged down. Dead quite at the clinic, they removed most of the chairs. I just signed up for the walk-in and went back 1.5 hours later, still had a 30 minute wait after that. By the time I was done I wasn't really in the mood to ride. Warmer tomorrow and Monday so I'll save my legs for then.

85 km loop today. Second half was slow, with the wind gusting to 40 km/h for a while. Stopped at a park that has elk and bison since I saw the bison from the road. Couldn't get close enough for bison pics since the park isn't open for the season yet, and their pen is further back.

Seeing double digit C temps this weekend I got too cocky, putting the fat bike in the basement and bringing the road bike up to the garage. Now the forecast is showing snow and below freezing highs next week. Long range forecast indicates mediocre early April weather.
