Canada is the only G7 without high speed rail. Is it feasible to connect at least Toronto to Montreal? Air Canada and Porter both offer almost 1 flight an hour between Montreal and Toronto. The travel demand is there, we just need the infrastructure.

In the US I think we only have a few stretches along the east coast that BARELY qualify as high-speed rail. But there are upgrades in progress atm.

It’s tricky in Canada because you’re spread out along the border. But Ontario and Quebec could support some lines.

Toronto-Kitchener-London is more realistic first phase for HSR in Canada since it only requires slight straightening, electrification, turning at-grade railway crossings into bi-level crossings, and, in some places, turning single track into double tracks to allow for 250km/h service.

Just run it to Pearson, connect eglinton LRT or finch LRT, and you have a huge rail transit hub at Pearson +the UP Express. Then carry it east on CP leaside subdivision and then the CP Belleville subdivision, running parallel highway 7, then it links into caldwell and ottawa subdivisions at which point new track maybe new bridge connecting ottawa and gatineau

I'm not as familiar with the rail infrastructure in Quebec, but in ontario there's enough existing rail corridors, most are currently rated for 60mph freight traffic. Is acquiring a new corridor more difficult than sharing an old one with the freight companies?

HSR requires very precise position detection and collision avoidance to ensure safety to operate at speed over 200km/h. Equipping every freight train that passes through that line with HSR-grade signalling equipment is not financially feasible and severely restricts operational flexibility of freight rail companies since only they have to reserve certain trainsets to operate along the lines west of Toronto. The previous Ontario government has bought right of way and started building relief railway to alleviate passenger rail congestion on Kitchener Line, and as far as I know, Ford hasn't got around to killing it yet.

That would be extremely smart, actually. At least get some planning going, clear up red tape, and maybe a private company like Virgin will actually build it themselves like they did here.

When Mirabel Airport was in the planing phase, instead of building a second north of Toronto the engineers instead wanted to build a single mega airport north of Kingston and to build a high speed rail going to Montreal and Toronto.

Could you imagine it, all civilian air transportation of the entire Quebec-Windsor corridor concentrated in rural territory north of Kingston, with direct transport to downtown Montreal or Toronto in just an hour. Fuck Trudeau.

It was good for its time but really doesn't hold much merit today when most travel is now focused solely on Toronto. Had Quebec not shot itself in the foot back in the 60's by scaring away its business sector we could talk about this. As it stands now though Pickering will be the home of the next International Airport since it closer to Toronto. There is no reason to build an Airport closer to Montreal since nobody is going there. You shouldn't just blame Trudeau, you also need to blame Quebec for fucking everything up and scaring off the business and financial sector back in the 60's. Montreal was once the center of the Canadian economy, and then the secessionist came; and if there is anything business doesn't like, its instability.

That's tricky, because rail would only work in the corridor. If airline subsidization stops, then airfare would rise for flights that can't realistically be covered by rail, and western Canada would get fucked over once again.

In 2019 dollars it's actually just over 2 billion when adjusted for inflation. I don't know about the economic effect or value it has but I think at the time the government cared more about the bragging rights since it was the longest bridge in the world before other longer ones where made.

I would much rather see 2 routes serve alternate stops and both meet at Union, like A - B - A - B - A - AB. That way trains can go a bit longer at higher speeds without stopping.

Why? The only corridors that could support rail in Canada are:

Well considering the province threw out the 1-stop plan to go back to the 3 stop one from the Rob Ford era we can safely assume that Doug is dead set on delivering the Subway Rob wanted. Construction on the SSE could have begun this year with the opening planned for 2025, but now the opening is proposed for 2029 so construction won't start until at least 2023/2024.

Not anytime soon. It along with part of the Finch corridor was planned to be used by the Etobicoke RT. The plan however was dropped because the SRT plan was changed to the one we have today and it didn't work out the way the Province said it would. The only portion of the Etobicoke RT that was built was the streetcar platform at Kipling (which irrc is gone now). We don't know much about the plan, but from what we do I put together a little map to show what it may have looked like. Its also worth noting that at the time Metro Toronto was planning the Etobicoke RT, the Province was also looking at utilizing the same corridors for it GO ALRT project.

Streetcars linked together like a train. Had the lines been built to there original plans they would have been upgraded to more modern looking LRT vehicles like the Flexity Freedoms or Citadis trains we see today.

Going to dump some photos of the original SRT plan. First here is Kennedy Station which was originally planned to be an open air station like Rosedale, just elevated. You can still see the original streetcar platforms at the real station today.

2/ Lawrence East Station. Its worth noting that the plans at the time called for level crossing instead of the overpasses we have today. Obviously its easier to have a level crossing with an LRT line with catenary than the current LIM and 3rd rail SRT.

4/ Midland Station. Midland like its current incarnation would have been elevated of Midland Avenue. However you can see the envisioned design was a lot more "futuristic" compared to the one that exists today. Going through the pictures it looks like the TTC was onboard with the idea of giving each station its own character like what is seen on the Spadina portion of Line 1.

One more from Scarborough Centre. In this case it seems by 1981 the TTC had dropped the idea of a ground level station and instead opted for an Elevated station albeit only 2 stories tall instead of the current 3.

The idea was to shut down the SRT for 5 years to convert the line to LRT. In that time service would be replaced by buses. This is the primary reason the TTC bought the articulated buses. However the conversion along with other reasons was why the plan was rejected. The irony here is that it seems the SRT will likely shut down before the SSE is completed thus its seems will be getting the shuttle buses anyways.

At this point it is really hard to say. The section between Kennedy and Ellesmere will be repurposed for the GO RER project so that the Stouffville line can be triple tracked and a GO station placed at the current site of Lawrence East RT station. However the elevated section between Midland and McCowan is far more unclear however 2 plans do exist; first being just tear the structure down. The other is converting it into an elevated park similar to New Yorks High Line park; however there is a big difference is in that the High Line in NYC rolls through Manhattan while the one in Scarborough would partly run through an industrial area around Midland so that kinda makes it less appealing.

Well I can't really say what the end result will be, most predictions have the Lawrence East GO Station being used lightly but honestly who knows. With GO RER the intended frequencies are one train every 15 minutes (possibly 7-10 during peak periods) however as with everything transit related nowadays in the province who the fuck really knows what will happen. I mean the plan is to have Stouffville and Lakeshore East electrified by 2025 yet Metrolinx hasn't even chosen a consortium to lead the project.
