Due to cycling governing bodies, mainstream competitive cycling doesn't allow us to use cool velomobiles. But triathlons are a fun sport if you like the form of swimming, the technology and aerodynamics of TT, and the endurance of running.

you can't get much cheaper than that with a brand new double/triple butted chromoly steel frame

most of the cost of the bikes that underage anons get butthurt about are from the other things like the wheels, di2, carbon cranks, dual sided power meters etc, because that's how you're supposed to build a bike if you can afford it, what bikesdirect does is they put the bare minimum acceptable frame, skimp on the paint job and put cheap shit components on it

it's sports equipment. athletes sponsored by big brands and even by governments which are also paying large salaries etc so the equipment isn't a big deal for them to pay for. like formula 1 cars or motogp bikes, they're not made for average joes but manufacturers make them available for purchase to those who want them. $10k or more isn't even an astronomical amount in the grand scheme of things when an entry level car (new) costs like $20k and cars and houses can cost millions. some manufacturers like for the olympics probably aren't interested in actually selling the equipment but they're required to by the rules so they set high prices and have long lead times. and a lot of this stuff is legitimately expensive to make like they use a higher grade of carbon fiber and more complex manufacturing methods and so on. and bikes can be a good mode of transportation depending on where you live, and some people enjoy the physical exercise that comes along with it. the hambini guy actually commutes on a tt bike.
