It made sense at the time, sure, lower costs, but broad gauge is superior, and enables higher speeds, while encouraging broader, safer rights of way.

What gauge are all of the world's high speed trains again? 1435 mm
What gauge is the Queensland Rail tilt train, just as fast as the XPT or Vlocity? 1067 mm

false equivalence between structure gauge and track gauge. Broader track gauge may encourage broader structure gauge but US standad gauge is some of the broadest in the world nevertheless.
