Why hasn't a car manufacturer company built an OBD2 scanner in the car? They could easily do it. Probably even have it built into the touchscreen

The whole point of OBD2 is to make the average person unable to diagnose their car. Pretty much every modern car has a passenger-side computer that could extremely easily display every setting and every error code, they just don't, because the car manufacturer doesn't want you to be able to access it.

On a less malicious note, I think part of it is also that user-facing diagnostics would mean dealing with customers who'd see something on the screen, not understand what it meant, and then bring their car in for warranty service over it, wasting service department time and resources and probably resulting in a whole lot of arguments with belligerent customers who'd think something was wrong with their car when it actually wasn't, or when it was something minor that'd be taken care of at the next scheduled service or whatever.

This is the result of government regulation.. if cars would actually be allowed to be OPEN SOURCE we would have access to the computer, but corporations are only allowed to sell cars if they are closed source and because they need to pay billions in crash certs which are just crashing one car with a guy holding a laptop but its a million each time. Also if you look at wiki leaks they require backdoors in all computers including cars specifically and the glows incentivize corporations to play nice and close everything off or else you end up like fisker or worse, pic related. It's also why they want self driving cars so they can lock you in your car and drive you down to langely to be epstein'ed.

Pretty sure there is an open source ECU project actually
But the overlap between people who know how to program for real time applications, people who know how engine management works, and people who can dick around with a spare car testing things to see what works and what doesn't, is very low

ECUs need a real-time operating system as many of their functions are insanely time critical.
Take as an example the fuel injections in a diesel engine:

That`s up to 350 injections per second timed to a precision of les than 1/1000th of a second.
While Linux is a good desktop operating system, it isn`t a real time one, meaning that it isn`t capable of doing that without some MAJOR changes.

There are 'real time' builds of the linux kernel. AV Linux uses it so you can do audio stuff without delay. Not sure if it's fully 'real time' enough though.

hot tip. check engine light only checks for problems with emissions.

while bad emissions could hint that there is something wrong with your car. a CEL light doesnt necessarily mean your car is breaking. it just means your going out of emissions parameters

engine rpm
fuel trim%
maf (g/s?)
load% (what is this?)

i cant find a vacuum leak,
the car runs fine, i havent noticed any unusual behavior
ive swapped maf sensor, iac valves and upstream o2 sensor,
cel stays on

do i need to manually clear the code? ive only been disconnecting the battery to check if it will stay off

Most people don't but that certain kind of OCD automotive hypochondriac absolutely does, along with spending all day every day on owner's club forums and stuff. I used to run the front of house at a BMW/Porsche tuning shop and we had a bunch of regulars who were that type and always made our lives a living hell.

That was a shockingly common situation. On the bright side of it, a bunch of us got really good deals on very lightly used race suspensions (and other parts) after these people gave up and decided to buy a second, more appropriate for their needs setup.
