>>1447481>cyclists should have no qualms about following all the normal road rules that cars, motorcycles etc. doNo.
It is unsafe and inefficient to do so.
You simply cannot just follow the road rules on a bicycle and expect to stay safe. You have to cycle as if you are invisible. At many intersections, simply having right of way and expecting drivers to see you and give way to you, is suicidal.
You do not really have free access to all roads like a motorist either. Many are dangerous and should be avoided, especially for a casual. So why should you not be able to cycle the wrong way up a one way street? Or turn hugging a curb at a red light? Or roll a stop sign? Or ride on a footpath? None of these things are inherently dangerous nor do they necessarily inconvenience anyone.
It is simply not 'fair', in a motorists eyes. But a motorist is blind to their own privileges and has no conception of how dangerous cars are compared to bicycles, so why stricter rules are necessary.
Common logic dictates that you should follow all the rules because even though some may be draconian or ill suited, your judgement also may be poor, and everyone judging their own rules in every case is bad for everyone.
But a cyclist must take their safety into their own hands and must make a smart judgement in every instance anyway. In which case, why should a cyclist be expected to follow all those rules, if those rules cannot in the least be relied on to keep them safe, or to advantage others? They are not designed for them, they are not suited for them, and they do not protect them, and nor do they even advantage everyone on the road in in common, as applied to cyclists, beyond giving a petty and selfish sense of 'fairness'.
9 times out of 10 a cyclist hit at an intersection is actually following the rules.
