What's a good entry level bike?

I want to start riding with a casual local group, it's not hard core or anything, mostly street and occasionally some easier mountain trails. Probably only like twice a month. I figure I'll see how I like it and go from there.

I haven't ridden a bike in like 20 years and I look at bikes now and it's really daunting the number of options and technology and whatnot
