the last bike i bought was $100. though i brought it home and immediately dropped another $100 on improvements. and it probably has another $400 to go before it's set up how i want it to eventually be.

eh, the only thing *real* bad on that list is a nonreplacable chainring, imo. but the real offender on op's pic is the "suspension" fork that probably weighs about 45 lbs and offers about zero functionality.

i worked on/sold those things for like 3 years and they're the only bike under $250 i'd buy new., otherwise i dont look at anything under like $400 when im buying new. pueblo surprisingly decent bike especially when you can get them on sale for like $180

my first adult bike was a fuji rebranded as a nashbar on clearance for $174. it was acceptable-tier to see if i liked mtb enough to buy a real bike. i did, but i still have my old bike. i just use it to tow my kids around on now so their seat and trail-a-bike don't fuck up the dropper post on my good bike.

Never seen that before. The brake force would be coupled with the steering, and all those turnbuckles and bellcranks must be more expensive then a bowden tube anyway. Did Mao decide that flex cables were a capitalist conspiracy or something?

You’re wasting your time man. Mtb is foreign to the OP and people like him. They are too clumsy to ride all but the flattest widest smoothest doubletrack and too square to enjoy anything remotely fun about riding a bike (going fast, getting air, pushing major watts on a climb and dropping people etc.)

I bought my bridgestone cb/3 off of an old guy on Craigslist for $60 ten years ago. Before finalizing the deal, I talked to him a bit and he was a retired dude who just liked repairing and selling old bikes.

Yeah, I can't really see myself spending a ton on a bike. Walmart sells brand new mountain bikes for $100.

Of course a cheap bike is gonna work just the same but without the extra comfy features. They are just plain mtbs that still were made for mountain biking back in the old days.
I had an El Cheapo bike back in the 90's and I downhilled the shit out of the mountain next to my town and even used it on a motocross jumping circuit. A part of some broken bearing balls and unfortunate beginner falls the bike performed just ok.
And of course there are dangerous chea bikes out there, that's why you don't buy it from Walmart in the first place.

It doesn't make you a "bad cyclist" it makes you lean towards being a cargo cultist consoomer.

A "bad bike" is based on your perspective. Generally, past 500, maybe $600 you only get marginal improvements, lower if you ride a simpler bike like that SS cruiser or a fixie. Most of the functionality of a bike can be had at that level.

Where do I find free disposed bikes that is not stealing them, so I can repair and paint them myself?

I need like 2 bikes just for transportation purposes, so having functioning parts will suffice.

If you live in a large metropolitan area, likely you will not be allowed to scrounge around them for frames and parts though.
In that case though, there may be bike libraries or other organizations set up for sharing and recycling bikes/components.

If someone was enterprising they might check out publicsurplus.com which is surplus from public institutions such as universities and police departments. Last batch we sold was about a grand for twenty bikes, local p/u only. Sure, there was some junk but also some nice frames and components in there.
