I don't really find it uncomfortable or annoying and I don't give a flying fuck what other people think about my appearance.
I've had close calls with collisions while biking 2 km to the store and I've slipped out on black ice less than 100m from my house and hit the ground hard on my helmet.
Yeah, the odds of suffering terrible brain damage while on those rides was low, but if I reduce that threat by just strapping on a helmet I may as well.
I do occasionally take my helmet off while bicycle touring, but only in cases where the chances of smashing my head on something are effectively zero and more or less within my control.
