Meaning they are more economical, and can carry more passengers on one line.
Then there's secondary benefits like more efficient use of space, more "natural" segregation (tram tracks tend to be run down the middle of the road or on ROW, doing the same for a bus lane will almost inevitably lead to bitching about hurr durr why bot have the bus lane on the side of the road, and the bus gets slowed down; alternatively a BRT takes up much more space than tram ROW).
Trams also attract more passengers because of subjective perception (tram=more cared for public transit, rails make for easy orientation) and better comfort.
