on some bikes it not possible due to the slight misalignment of the rotating parts as you say
either the chain rings are slightly bent or the crank is not all the way onto the square taper
one ghetto method to get extra FD clearance is to rotate the FD very slightly clockwise
this moves the downshift dimple on the outer plate outwards from the seat post
while moving the lowest point of the Cage inwards towards the chain stay
the bike in pic is shown in 48x14 gear
but has been set up to be able to run in 48x28 and 28x14 without the chain rubbing on the shift plates
not an easy task nor recommended by any bike shop
I just did it to see if it were possible
still shifts OK
more modern FD have a different shapes of dent in the plates and a step at the very bottom of the inner plate to allow wide chain angles
such as to the middle of the cassette with the chain on the smallest chain ring
