How do you deal with wet shorts on a ride?
The good weather is gone now, I have a light rain coat for my upper body but I'm concerned about chafing if my shorts get wet

Check the grease on everything, check the cables and bearings, and replace the tubes, you will likely need to replace the tires as well but might be OK

Rubber does age, but the rate that rubber perishes at depends on the rubber in question and the conditions it was kept in

If you don't know what you're doing take it to a bike shop and get them to service is for you

I went to the place, put air into the tires and drove home. Gear shifting was flawless, brakes worked precise, no bad noise at all. Shimano 3x7 SXT MC 34.

Brought new cheap tires. The guy Said the arrows should be racing up. Cant change it without removing the whole tire, which i suck at. Cant rotate because One side has this security lock so the tire will stay in place.

Anyway how Will this affect my ride?

The actual tread looks symmetric (the 'arrow' in the middle does fuck all for traction) so I doubt it will make a difference, though personally my OCD would never tolerate it.

Pic related is only £180 from Decathlon and comes with a triple and front suspension. Seems like a bloody bargain to me. Why the fuck have I been riding road bikes?

Their cheapest road bike is £100 more expensive and only comes with a single. How the fuck is somebody meant to get up hills with a fucking single?

Why are road bikes such a goddamn rip off, even the cheap ones? I should get pic related, it would be a great practical everyday bike and the low gearing will make hills a piece of piss.

Road bikes use double chainsets, and you get up hills with a compact chainset and a low gear on the back (and getting gud)

I use a Vaude triangle bag. Zwo separate compartments with independent zippers, good quality and fit, enough room for a mini pump, multitool, spare tube, tire levers, house keys and a cloth bag that seconds as a rag if I drop the chain. There's also a larger version called "frame bag" if you need more room.

How do you deal with injuries, riding injured, and recovery?

I seem to be prone to hurting myself (that is mountain biking for you) having broken a wrist, sliced open my shin, and as of yesterday probably broken pinky. Every time I have injured myself my fitness and skill goes stalls and goes backwards. It is getting a bit annoying.

inb4 dont crash. All these crashes have been caused by poorly set up bikes or old kit.

Having only one side supported looks really janky. Maybe in reality it works better than I think it does. I've been using a Minoura truing stand for about 5 years now, it works fine for the price you pay. My friend has a bench mounted Park Tool truing stand and I've heemed and hawed at it for a few minutes and it seems a lot nicer than what I've got, but it also cost a lot more. If I was truing wheels frequently I'd buy a PT one, but since it's only a few times per year occurrence for me at most the Minoura one is fine for my purposes.

Even if it's literally the fault of poor set up, that's still on you for not being a good enough rider to recognize something was wrong with it before it happened. You need to learn how to bail (it's a skill and you should practice it off the trails) and you need to take things slower as you ramp up to more difficult stuff. Crashing shouldn't mean serious injury, again, crashing/bailing is a skill that needs to be practiced if you want to do gnarlier stuff. Go on youtube, lots of videos from MTB and BMX people about how to handle crashing safely.

the main difference is that the tread on backwards will flick more water onto your back if you go over wet surface
I always use the Cassette to remind me of the direction to point the tire tread in

its easier to larger diameter and wider tires off
the only other factor being how tough the wire bead is

with metal tire levers it can help to smooth off their edges and corners
this helps prevent damage to the rim
some plastic tire levers can be a little sharp so be careful of the inner tube when using them

starting on one side
using one tire lever you can get an 1/8th of the tire off
with a little wiggling and a bit of force 1/4th of the tire can be pop off
on though tires two or three levers are needed
all that's needed is to take off one of the wire beads
then the rest can be done by hand except sometimes the last little bit

I think one of my problems is that my front derailleur adjustment was improper; so I couldn't get some of the middle "crossover" gearing I needed. I'm pleasantly surprised at how pinned flat pedals still can get circular pedal motion instead of a pistonrod push downward.

I rode 92km - which is quite a lot for me - on my road bike today and my left hand went a little numb. I couldn't even shift the front derailleur, had to help myself with the right hand. I assumed this was due to the cold but hours after returning home it's still a little numb and weak, particularly in the index finger. Should I worry if it doesn't go back to normal by tomorrow?

Where on your hand was numb? The whole thing? Sounds like nerve compression and where can tell what nerve/branch was compressed. Regardless, how's your glove and overall bike fit situation? I'd bet it resolves, but you should get it checked out if it doesn't in the next day or so.

Could be a matter of bike fit. Look up a bike fitting guide online or if you want to pay shekels, go to a professional bike fitter at a LBS. Don't just go to any LBS and ask for a fit though, do the research online to find an actual good fitter in your area.
Otherwise just play around with fit yourself and use online guides.

Feels like it's just the wrist, index and middle fingers. I've been riding gloveless recently which I thought would be fine with my new bar tape. Regarding bike fit, I've been experimenting a little recently (mostly with the saddle) and it doesn't feel quite right yet.

Used to have this problem and tried to solve it by getting softer bar tape until I figured out it was because my hands slid forward when they were sweaty and jammed the brake hood into the spot between my forefinger and thumb, which has lots of nerves and shit apparently. Got some tackier tape (bontrager supertack) that solved the problem instantly even though it wasn't quite as soft.

Go for the 6. The big difference between the 4 and 5 is the hydro brakes. 6 over 5 has a cassette instead of a freewheel and a fork with a lockout, as well as an 8 speed drivetrain instead of 7. Newer ones are 2x instead of 3x which just makes sense.

Your weight distribution of your bike fit, how much drop you're running, and your saddle not being level could all be factors.

I'm assuming you're riding a road bike with drop bars, so I'd advise starting with making sure your saddle is level, and consider bringing your saddle back and down a little and maybe add an extra spacer under your stem.

You just gotta get back on the bike as soon as you can and focus on taking it easy and working on your handling skills, the fear and lack of confidence goes away after a handful of good rides.

You need to respect your equipment too: I enjoy averaging 70 down one of the hills in my area that leads back into the city on my modern carbon road bike, but wouldn't even dream of doing that on my 1980s road tt bike with its alu fork.

I'm currently running a somwehat thick foam bar tape, it's pretty soft but also less sticky than the gel tape that came with the bike. I might try something stickier next time, thanks.

Go for it, before you start riding check that the clipping in is not too tight and you can actually clip and unclip with relative ease (not so much that you're accidentally unclipping, but not so little that you fall on your side at a red light because you couldn't get your feet out)
Also don't clip the shoes to the pedals without actually wearing the shoes, you'll have a hard time getting them off
Also remember you unclip by twisting your feet, not just jerking them

i had another look yesterday and managed to get the b tension screw back to where it should be, I ended up having to use some vice grips to turn the screw as any attempt to turn with a screwdriver was shredding the screw head, need to keep and eye on it to see if it starts to fuck with the hangar again

If you have road shoes: probably the one with clipless on both sides because road shoes have protruding cleats so you can't easily use a platform anyway.

Dual sided, for sure. I hate faffing about with single sided road pedals. Dual sided, I just put my foot down and get it clipped in. I don't really know if the platform on road pedals help to make a more stable platform, but I think the shoe itself is already plenty stiff.

Yeah, that used to be the case, but newer enduro pedals like the Time Speciale, XTR 9120, Ritchey WCS Trail, and Nukeproof CL went wide for a more stable platform. The stack height differences are around 5mm now not even meaningful. With shoes, the big difference now is tread for walking. idk if there's any reason left to go with single sided clipless anymore aside from fashion.

The cranks didn't come loose. I grabbed the threads with pliers wrapped with cloth. Man I'm such a dumbass. Still i think it'll be good for a while. Saw that the Campagnolo force shifters were weld together already. Man why are roadbikes so fragile.

are you the first owner? there may have been a lockring on there that some home mechanic may have forgot to put back on.
anyway, to properly service it, you need a crank puller to even see if I'm right, it may be a sealed unit with no lock ring. there's different tools for tightening the different styles, too.
maybe take it to a shop or a coop, sounds like you might be in over your head. but if you want to buy the tools, I can tell you what to do

Don't know what a shop asks for. I'd really love to do it my self, but don't know which tools I need. I have a cheap crank puller, and have pulled a crank before. But this is stuck. I drenched it in wd40 maybe drenching it some more tomorrow. I'll probably unscrew the inner screw and just ride around the block until I feel movement. The BB is tight right now but the chain line is totally fucked in the lower gears of the cassette. So I'll be riding small-small, which has a pretty straight chain line.
Once the drive train is off I'll continue. To identify the tools needed for BB removal.

Well I primarily use the middle ring, which is a 36t, and I do a fair bit of climbing. The bike's mostly used for bikepacking and I generally have tons of extra weight strapped on when I'm going into the mountains for a couple days, so it seemed like a decent point to start.
Seems to me somewhere in the 36-42t range would be a good size.

Don't use WD40. Finish Line's chill stuff (I think it's called Chill Zone.. purple bottle if I remember right) is good at helping loosen stuff up, or their Speed Degreaser.
Make sure you use the right crank puller. If you use the wrong crank puller with the wrong size head thing, it can fuck your stuff up. Same goes for if that head thing came off of the crank puller.
As for removing the BB, if it's one of the generic old ones which it probably is, you'll need the Park Tool BBT-22 (or the equivilent from another manufacturer)
As for crank puller, this bike is probably square taper and as such needs the Park Tool CCP-22 or equivilent. However, just because the CCP-22 (or some other crank puller, for tha tmatter) will thread into the crankarm does not necessarily mean that it is the proper crank puller, because if it's designed for a different type of spindle (i.e. square taper instead of octalink or vise versa etc) you're going to ruin things

They sure are more comfortable though, especially for heavier riders. out of 2 identical weight tyres that are 25c and 28c, I would safely bet that the 28 would be faster on average road conditions, especially if it's nice and supple.

In my purely anecdotal experience, tyre pressure is the most important factor, then tyre weight and suppleness.

I would contend that if you're 80kg+ you'll see a substantial difference in comfort and speed once you dial in your pressures right with a 28 vs a 25.

Is bike supposed to be silent when cycling? I took my bike to local bike shop to get it all cleaned and lubed up but it still doesn't seem quiet. The sound is coming from where the front cogs/pedals are (when pedaling) and I'm not really sure if I'm just retard or is it something that should be happening. And don't pay a shop to lube your bike. Chain lube is like $5-$10 for a bottle that will last a while. All you have to do is squirt it over the chain and spin the pedals backwards a bit to work it in.

If the interface between spindle and crank is busted, maybe. But it's normal for it to be a bit hard to remove.
Dumb question, but you didn't forget to remove the bolts or nuts, right? Perform a visual inspection and if you don't know what's going on post a pic.

You can use degreaser. When applying proper lube, you'll want to apply bike lube to the full length of the chain, then let it sit 10 minutes, then wipe it off. You want to keep wiping with a clean rag until no more black streaks are being left on the rag such that all of the lube is off, then you're good to go. Reason being, lube is supposed to get into the internals of the chain, but you don't want any lube left on the outside cause that attracts dirt which will then wear out your components faster. Letting it sit 10 minutes before wiping down is to give it time to sink in and let carrier solvent evaporate.

Depends on the type of noise. If there is squeaking, chain needs lube. If there is creeking, it's probably a bottom bracket or pedal issue.
You should hear a sound coming from the cassette/freehub (rear cogs) when coasting (not pedaling).
But anyway I'm rambling about other noises. As for your issue, hearing a noise from near the chainrings/pedals/bottom bracket area when pedaling.. hard to say when you don't say what kind of sound it is. If it sounds like rubbing, it could be the chain rubbing on the front derailleur. Pay attention, look down when pedaling, see if the chain is ever rubbing on the derailleur. Or get off the bike, hang it on something (or have someone hold it up) so rear wheel is off the ground and pedal (or just leave it on the ground and pedal backwards) with your hand, and watch to see if the chain is hitting on the front derailleur anywhere in the rotation.
Park Tool has a good article on front derailleur adjustment if that is the problem

I’ve got a ‘13 Jake the Snake. I’ve had problems with my derailleur for a while now. Every time I try to shift from the inner front chainring to the outer chainring the chain slips off completely. I’ve tried fixing it myself and no luck. I took it into my LBS twice and they bent the derailleur back into shape but that didn’t fix it either. I’ve also replaced the chain and cleaned everything.

Any advise? I’m a relative noob when it comes to bike maintenance.

put bb tool on bb, thread bolt with big washer into spindle so that washer is pushing against bb tool so bb tool stays in place on bb. when the FD is shifted all the way to the upper, outer limit, the bottom edge of the derailleur cage should only be 2mm above the teeth on the big ring. that's a rule of thumb, you hear different numbers but anyway it's really close, as long as it just barely clears you can probably eyeball it.
on the other axis, the cage should be in line with the chain-line, but if your LBS couldn't even catch that it should be burned to the ground.

Looking closely at this video I think it's the bottom bracket spindle itself that got bent - all three chainrings and the guard still appear to be parallel to each other, so I don't think there's any damage to the crank arm itself. In theory your regular crank puller should still be able to pull the arm off, but maybe something in the way the spindle bent is stopping this? If there was damage to the arm where the puller threads in then you wouldn't end up with extra resistance, you'd just tear out the threads...

I think the most likely solution here is to cut the spindle with a dremel tool and replace the entire crankset - but before spending the time and money on that definitely check the alignment of the rear triangle to the rest of the frame, there's a good chance your frame is bent if the impact was enough to bend the BB spindle.

In your lowest gear, the chain should be within 1mm of rubbing the cage. You'll also have to allow for the chainring being out of true, but also get as close as possible with no rubbing.

Unbolt the derailleur and rotate it so the cage turns inward a little, that and beding the cage are about all you can do if limit screw adjustment doesn't work.

I'm looking to upgrade my bike's drivetrain.

Currently a 3x9 Shimano Acera system which is becoming old and faulty. I wanna get a 1x11 Shimano SLX M7000 to replace it and make things a bit simpler.

This groupset package comes with chainring, cassette, rear derailleur, rear shifter and chain. Are Shimano crank arms pretty standard? Should the chainring fit the crank arm or am I going to have to buy a new crank arm/BB system as well?

I'm currently running a 3x9 drivetrain on my mtb and would like to replace it with something more modern. Right now I'm looking at 1x12 SLX and 2x10 Deore. SLX is only slightly more expensive but requires relacing the wheel on a micro spline hub for that 510% range and HG+, and only saves me around 200 grams over Deore. Deore would also be cheaper to maintain. I mostly ride XC and occassionally participate in marathons. Any reasons to pick one over the other?

If you're replacing the chainrings but not the bb or cranks, then you don't need to worry about spindle interface. That's just for making sure the cranks work with the bb.
For just replacing the rings, you'll just need to pay attention to bcd, 4 vs 5 hole, and symmetric vs offset hole spacing.
Also, if those 3 specs do not line up between your current crank and your new rings, you may be able to replac just the crank spider without replacing the crankarm. If replacing the spider, you need to watch all 4 specs I listed in last post.

my ass hurts

shorter/agressive rides dont seem to be bad but any more endurance paced rides get very painful after about an hour. it's not saddle sores it's like direct pressure on my sit bones and it stays sore for a day+ afterwards. my feet also slowly go numb.

seat seems to be at the proper height/setback but have been shifting it around to see if it helps (hasn't yet). i also tried an older seat i've had sitting around with slightly more padding but that didnt do it either. do i have covid or what?

That bike doesn't exist at that price point. Closest you'll get is a Canyon Grail, which is around 9.5kg. Might be able to get it below 9 with some expensive upgrades that are worth 4x what the bike costs. If you really want those features at that weight you're looking at dropping 5000€ on a carbon gravel racer like a Dark Matter.

The big difference, besides color, is that the 2 has a 3x8 drivetrain and the 3 has 2x9. 2x9 is easier to use and maintain. For noodling around town, commuting, going on charity rides, and exercise they're fine. Decent basic all-purpose bikes.

this is a legitimate strategy and it's because the only thing that matters is where your hands are in relation to your steerer, not how the metal is arranged between.
it's why old french randonneur bikes were set up with long reach bars and short reach stems, to get more usable space to slide up and down. it's also why old mountain bikes have super long stems, they were trying to achieve road reach with zero-reach bars. current mountain bikes use short stems because the leverage of their bars and the massive fork rake compared to a road bike keeps it on track, not the self-correcting effect of putting your grip significantly ahead of your steerer
unfortunately most bars aren't long enough for this fit to work out right and most frames are gonna feel like shit in the upright position on a 0mm stem. try something like nitto noodles and a 60 to 80mm stem.

Is it normal for disc brake to be hard to adjust? I just replaced the pads on my mountainbike and I find it very difficult to adjust the brake so that it is not rubbing?

Hybrid is a marketing term. This particular hybrid leans towards cheap flat bar road.

City bikes tend to be fat heavy pigs, but many perform identical to hybrids.

This is slightly faster than an expensive racing mountain bike, although much of the gap goes away if you switch tires.

It's on par with a really cheap road bike...but only for the first 4 seconds, and then the lack of a good aero position takes over.

all in all, i think i can finally say that a hybrid is the kind of bike i need. i posted also in the /bbg/ thread and you've all been quite helpful.
a gravel might be even better and funnier probably, but it will costs a lot more and i don't want to.

Spent a little while cleaning up this old bike rear derailleur that had so much shit caked on to it, but there's still a lot of gunk left on it that's hard to get to.

I've been using some citrus degreaser but is there anything maybe a bit more heavy duty that won't kill the components that I can spray on to get rid of the rest?

with it on the bike I've never had a problem with citrus stuff, but I default to using Simple Green, personally. just flood it and floss with a rag and brush with a toothbrush. remove the chain, obviously.

only thing is if it fits you. you better be a manlet, that's a small frame.
you only want an inch between your taint and the top tube when you straddle it. 2inches is okay. 2½ or more means that bike is too small for you.
conversely if you can't straddle the top tube with feet flat on the ground and a little space between your taint, the bike is too big. bike in pic is tiny but just saying for any other bikes you may try.

If you've got it clean enough that it functions properly I wouldn't worry too much about it. Otherwise you can take it off and soak it or something. Keep in mind too that RDs aren't that expensive to replace if it's really that bad (and not high end or anything).

No. I broke a tooth on my vintage GT LTS and bought a replacement center third gear from eBay, not realizing it was wide/ narrow. Every other shift would be rough because if a narrow tooth hit a narrow chain gap it would fit so would ride until it popped into matching.

Also narrow/wide chain rings aren’t ramped, so shifting is even more fucked up. Luckily I only wasted like $5
