Still the first part is way different than what I saw so far about railroads.
The current system made a lot of sense when it designed for steam powered vehicles with lower traffic centuries ago. Maybe it should change now.
The whole point was attending more passangers per day, with shorter trips, reusing an existing railway system by putting a small physical and coordination changes in the tracks.
I know you can do this maneuver in a bigger scale, what you can't do with a big vehicle is the same manuever almost anywhere by simply adding a small additional track on the side of the main one.
If you have dynamic routing, high traffic and small vehicles, being able to use bigger continuous segments in both ways can improve overall performance a lot.
