Thoughts on folding bicycles?

Seems convenient to bring into the office and not worry about theft.

I would only get one if I had to take a rain with it or had a 10 story walkup apartment. locking a bike up in the city is not as dangerous as people think of you go far enough with theft proofing people won't even consider it

very unlikely anyone would bother with what I have described. the problem is suburban people who buy nice looking bikes, don't modify, don't research, don't know what a torx bolt even is, and think Big U Lock = better

Well folding bikes are pretty convenient depending on which model you pick and what you intend on using it for. I have commuted to work on a folding bike for over 2 years in all weather conditions (rain, show, sun, etc). If you get one that works with your style or riding it might make urban cycling more convenient.

Depends on the model you are looking at, cheaper models are typically 30+ pounds, nicer models can weigh as little as 18 pounds. You can get a fairly robust one $1500 that weights 25 or so pounds or less.

Is that the S3L? That's the one I'm thinking of getting. I'd love to hear what you think about the gearing because I'm pretty confident about the S and L bits but not the gearing. I've heard the 3 gear is more reliable, and that would be nice.

The Montague Boston is intriguing. Something I'm a little sketched out by though is that I've seen no review stating it can accept other tires. It comes with 700x28c tires. I've kind of standardized on 700x32c on all my bikes, so if I bought a Montague Boston I'd want to put 700x32c on it, but it looks like there's VERY little clearance below those brake calipers, like the bike was designed down to the mm to only accept 700x28c.

It depends on what you call "trail riding". If it's hardcore downhill with rocks and jumps then no, if it's a gentle track in the forest it seems ok, no need to spend more.

If you’re gonna go folding, just suck up the cash and get a brompton. Would definitely recommend. Rides really nicely. I’ve had a couple of tumbles on pavement and the frame and paint have both held up very well. No issue folding. Once you get good at it, you can have it from fully folded to bikable in under 10s easily. Takes a little long to fold completely. I’ve heard the knockoffs don’t fold well.

I have a six speed. That pretty much covers what I need gear wise.

Don't listen to the other anon. Legit Paratroopers are pretty sturdy as long as you replace the folding skewer every couple years (otherwise it develops stress cracks and might fail and fold the bike under you). They are generally around one component group tier more expensive than their contemporary bikes, and vast majority of them are on low-mid end components.

I started getting hyped for a brompton but couldn’t afford one. Instead, I bought a Taiwanese aluminum frame that folds in a way I really like, 16”-305 wheels. And I barely touch it after building it. I have no idea how people ride folding bikes, I never got used to the twitchiness or how easily it gets upset over road bumps

what are you talking about? bromptons have tiny wheels, a high centre of gravity, and bmx handlebars. They don't ride like a road bike at all, it's more like being on a mobility scooter that could fall over at any second.
