Is that the bike you currently have OP? Just ride that for a while and n+1 when you understand it's limitations and know things like sizing.

Honestly dude it looks like a great fucking bike for that price. 10/10 would buy and ride as is or swap to drops at some point. Otherwise, the rest looks good.

the thin tires (23 to 28 mm) on road bikes a very vulnerable to glass
also road bikes use thinner chains (less than 7 mm) and low capacity derailleurs (short cage 23 to 26 tooth - 10 tooth front difference)

with the more specised road bike you give up comfort and versatility for speed
more recent bikes have started to move away from this and closer to a hybrid than in the past
where as hybrid bikes are more like the better late 90s MTB in the way the handle but they are a little lighter and faster than an MTB

it's also the perfect bike to learn bike mechanics on when you decide to get better tires, install fenders, rack, change the bars etc.
so good job. finding an old bike this close to NOS is very rare and it's black, which is the best color. do not ever sell it

I think i'll be happy with this bike, just purchased it.

Salesperson did note that the bars on this one are closer to a road bike in term of positioning, than a comfort hybrid; so maybe i'll get best of both worlds

That looks like a rigid mtb, not a hybrid.

Great choice.

Of all the many bikes I've ridden, I've come to realize my favorite is my mid 90s hybrid I bought for 50 bucks. Expensive road bikes are nice, but this one is the only bike that feel like an extension of myself. So I ride it everywhere, commuting, forest roads, strava climbs

If you like it and feel good on it, it's a good bike.

Yeah that would have probably been marketed as an ATB (all-terrain bicycle) back in the day, if it was marketed at all. A short googling shows that there really isn't much information available about that model, but it might be closer to the upper end than the lower for Nishiki's lineup. What groupset does it have equipped?

I probably could/should have asked for more detailed information, but it wouldn't mean much to a noob like myself..

I bought it entirely online, as this refurb bike shop is doing online/phone sales only due to covid and whatnot. I'll be picking it up this weekend.

Luckily this place has a full 30 day guarantee, if it doesn't work for me.

OP you did alright - as "hybrids" go that's an decent one. The only thing that's obviously not great is the rear wheel, since it looks they swapped in a wheel with a painted rim. Ask if you can get a different rear wheel instead, but keep the modern freewheel they installed.

The road bike you posted is okay, but no great deal since the shifters it comes with are garbage, and the wheelset could be really nice but Roval brand wheels can be a basketcase to deal with if they need truing.

the flat bar is good for short trips
and the upright seating makes it easier to look about, and repostion your weight on the bike

but this is less of a big deal if you are in an urban environment where changes in speed are frequent

kind of strange
its got three chain rings up front
and what looks like a medium cage rear derailleur
so aside from the wheels and handle bars its not super road focused
maybe more like a touring bike

I think either is a decent choice it just comes down to how comfortable you are with drop bars
and to what extent the bike will be used in rough or low traction situations

It's a good bike. Hybrids are perfect for commuting, enjoying the ride, comfort and fitness. I would never want to commute on a road bike, go test ride one and see how uncomfortable they are. They are for pure speed, so more aero/lighter for climbing.

Those types of things. With this, you have answers, with a road bike, you'd be kinda stuck.
