Is there any one in particular you recommend?
How do you pick out the right saddle?

The right saddle for you is one that fits.
The general rule is sitbone width plus 20mm, but things get a bit more complex once you start talking very aggressive positions.

This is false. I have Raleigh’s from the 40’s and with a bit of leather care they came right back. And after the a new saddle is broken in for a bit they’re quite comfy. Brooks isn’t a meme like your post.

Buy a Gyes. Taiwanese brand of leather saddles made of a much sturdier Australian leather. They take ages to break in if you don't use cream but they will last much longer than Brooks before sagging.

All my bikes have a brooks, even my dirtjumper... Brooks saddles are absolutely worth every penny. The one I have on my soma is the b-17 swallow amd that one close to 10k miles on it. with little to no maintenance i.e., I have only polished it maybe 10 times in the 10 years I have riding it. Only thing that could even be remotely close to falling apart is one rivet came undone. I have a couple of pre-war bikes that also have brooks saddles on them, mainly because they are period correct and they are amazing even on vintage bikes. Not only that if i am not mistaken they have a lifetime warranty on them.

I picked one up in 2018 when I bent a saddle rail during a ride. It was the only reasonable thing the shop had in stock.

It's durable, and low maintenance, but I've never really enjoyed it. It's not comfortable on longer rides, say anything over 20 miles. I leave it on my winter commuter.

There's usually a mold line on them, where the canvas ends and it transitions to just rubber on the underside. You gotta hit that with some sandpaper, so it doesn't abrade your shorts while riding.

I ride a Charge Spoon, very comfortable, shame you can't find them easily any more. I'm thinking of getting a Brooks for my heavier bike where weight doesn't matter, but comfort does over the long haul. The question is, if the Charge Spoon is great and is about 140 mm wide, do I want a Swallow or a B17 Narrow Carved? Seems like the Swallow has more of a typical sports profile to it, but the B17 isn't far off, has the carved out middle section, and has the lower flaps of leather tied together. As I understand it, these saddles will splay out over time, don't people worry about rubbing?

I have both of these saddles. the swallow is more a sporty profile and has an option for titanium rails. whereas the the b-17 imperial, has the cutout on top and hthe holes for lacing the bottom together. I have done that, and what I found is that it winds with the exact profile as the swallow. I have not quite broke it in yet and I have found that is not as comfortable as the swallow. I suspect that will change as I break it in or it breaks me in.

I bought a Brooks imperial (I think it's called imperial), the one with the prostate cutout, 10 years ago and it has been on my main and single bike since then. I stopped caring about it after the first year. It's still in great shape and comfortable enough for me not to need padded shorts even for 100km rides.
I've heard that b17 need some time to become comfortable but mine felt great from the first day. I am not saying you cant find an equally comfortable saddle for less €, but I'm pretty happy with my purchase.

I ride a wtb volt and the right angles around the thigh area causes umcomfyness. As in it feels like it's digging into my inner thighs where it connects to my taint. sounde like saddle is too high, had the same problem, raise it down 5mm, it makes tremensous difference if its too high.

normal people are fine with whatever saddle and little to no regard to their bike fit because they ride just a few miles at a time
once you start riding for hours on end, you're entering severe autist territory, and wearing cycling shorts shouldn't be a big deal at that point
here are some clothing tips for you unracers, notice that he suggests things like fly fishing shirts, not just any random shirt, because even an unracer can't expect to "just ride" and to be comfortable for hours on end without putting any effort into his bike fit and attire

Leather is a meme and even in 1896 it had known problems. Synthetics like we have now didn't exist and can be combined with springs for maximum comf. Fito and Velo have different taiwan made sprung saddles that are nice, and brooks makes sprung ones if you need your hipster leather.
Also frame suspension is a meme, springer fork is superior because the suspension is at the wheel and not above it. Suspension seatpost is not as good either but saves weight vs sus frame.

you don't deserve nice things. the leather should be taught with a little give, not bouncy. do not use proofide. get any protective/restorative leather conditioner like you might use on boots, and apply it. most suggest letting it set in overnight. slowly re-tension the saddle by turning the bolt on the front clockwise, until it isn't shaped like a hammock. pay attention to the areas around the rivets - if the leather begins to crank or pull away from the rivets more than a mm or so, stop.

It varied/varies on how I'm feeling. Could be 30 mins or hours. Didn't do any touring but it was great. I think it was the Selle Italia C2, def an older model because the newer ones look slightly different.

I had one, the C17 carved model. Unlike leather Brooks saddles, they do not break in and get more comfortable. If you sit on it and dont like it, that's what you get.

the saddle is fucked because you didn't care for it. the leather stretched without being re-tensioned, causing it to bow out to one side. you can try loosening the bolt, repositioning the tensioner, and retightening.

I regret buying a B17. I used to have a Brooks Pro which was nice and firm, I could slide forward and back on it. The problem was that it actually wasn't to different from a firm plastic base saddle. I bought a B17 because that's supposed to be normal and break in to be comfortable, unlike the hard and narrow Pro. Instead, what I find is the seat has very little tolerance for different positions. If I slide forward, it doesn't seem to give me much support, I don't know if it's the shape, or that it sags, or flares, or what. If I slide back, I can feel the rail bracket. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a hammocky leather saddle that allows more fore/aft seating?

However, after it breaks in slightly, the metal frame starts to dig into your ass. I've tried to lace it differently, with different tension. I've tried to angle it, move it, but nothing helps. It's just getting worse and after ~750km I'm going back to looking for a comfortable plastic saddle. I think anyone with sitbones wider than 110mm should avoid this saddle.
