Anyone living in cities ever had their bike stolen? DId you ever get it back? How did it happen?

Had my dutch bike stolen and I miss her a lot. Also, dutch bikes are best bikes

Not me, but a close friend had his bike stolen (because he locked it with one of those shitty locks you can open with a pen), then I found it for sale online, he contacted the buyer, met him, and stole it back from him.

Yep. I had a nice avanti hybrid but I only locked it with a 4-digit combo lock. I thought it was safe away from the street in my apartment complex; boy was I wrong. Somebody just stalked someone with a key fob in one night (or it was someone who lived in the complex...), either felt the lock out or took a pair of bolt cutters to it, came back after a few days and gone without a trace. Now I'm paranoid about security and will always lock with a high-end u-lock frame to post/bike rack + cable lock wheels to frame.

German here. Bike theft was a big problem, especially in cities. Stolen bikes often ended up somewhere in eastern Europe. A few weeks ago this stopped. Bike theft dropped to almost zero. At the same time borders had been closed to slow down corona-virus. Maybe just coincidence.

Are you talking race-tier bikes or whatever average bikes?
I think in the latter case the profit is not worth the effort, compared to just buying a lot at an auction.

I actually do pretty well, mostly I just use bolt cutters and snip the cable, occasionally i steal the front wheel , or the seat if it has a hand clamp to take it off

Oh man about 10 years ago my friend had a blue haro bmx I think he got mugged for it...any ways my cousin ended up buying it off some guy several cities away in garberville california like 5 years after my friend moved My cousin ended up giving me the bmx it then was stolen from me and my bud ended up finding the thief I got it back eventually traded it to a different cousin of mine for a sweet skull bong and a backpack and it ended up getting stolen from him off the front rack on the bus and now I have no fuckin clue where this bike is but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if I found it again.

Lol yeah when it was in my possession it definitely needed alot of work somebody put a crappy front sprocket on it and didn't ride as easily or smooth as it used to I didn't have money at the time to maintain/upgrade it so I traded it off.
When it was new that bmx was sweet it was the best bike in our group rode super smooth climbed hills easily that bike was a legend back then.
I was surprised that the original joe dirt tires were still on it.

No, but I did steal a lot of them as a teenager. More recently, I noticed a stolen one advertised at a pawn shop (remembered the classifieds post from the guy who had it stolen) so emailed him as well as called the pawn shop and told them not to sell it. He ended up getting it back.

The only bikes I've ever owned that haven't been stolen are the two I own right now. I used to live in a big European city and got one bike stolen out of my pad-locked basement compartment. Another one was stolen from the inner yard, that was on me. Now I'm in a US mid-sized city, living near the city border and keep the bikes in the garage. Bike theft here happens mostly where students live. I still weep for my nice trekking bike.

i have about 50/50 recovery rate of getting my stolen shit back. lots of stories. one time i layed on the horn of a bigass work truck across lanes toawrds a tweaker on the sidewalk with a bmx, i scared the shit out of him. told him im taking the bike a few times he kept talking and talking and i then i gave him a $20 and told him im taking the bike, fuck off and he shut up and ran, lol. and then i went back to work with a bmx. i found the owner, got it back tohim.

I studied in midtown Atlanta for a few years. Had a fixed-gear butted steel frame bicycle, locked it to sturdy things with a full-size U-lock (not the mini U-lock garbage). No quick-release.

When I went to music venues, I took my LED blinker with me, and I left my hi-viz safety vest draped over the bike. Most people that steal bikes respond to brand names emblazoned on the sides. Never had anything stolen, and more importantly, I was never afraid of it being stolen, so I rode it more.

If you leave it out overnight(s) parts of it will be gone no matter what you do.

Lucky I never got a bike stolen. It was pure luck. When I was young I was pretty naive and would take my trek bike to school and sometimes left it unlocked. I also volunteered at a community centre in a government housing area full of niggers and would sometimes leave it against the side of the building unlocked. But no one touched it there.
