It makes sense for e-bike components, otherwise it's kind of pointless as you can quickly diagnose mechanical faults yourself and bicycles tend to not have a power supply.

"Check Engine" = "Something's wrong but we're not going to tell you what until you take it to the shop even though cars are computers now and there's no reason we couldn't just give you an error code to google. 80% chance it's not serious, 20% chance everything in your engine bay needs to be replaced or you'll explode, 0% chance the bill will be under $1,000."

Because it is cryptic (counting flashes in 2k20) and shit is triggered by fucking throttle being a tad out of alignment... And it didn't tell me anything when I blew up hall sensors in the wheel.

Nope. Check engine light is retarded and it is meant to scam you.
Just like it is on cars, since it means that "oy vey, your emissions are bad". Fuck that, I don't give a fuck, nobody gives a fuck about some catalytic converter after I passed inspection. But it also can mean bad things, but you will ignore it, since you'd thing that this is something non-serious.

As for EV, there must be a built in service diagnostic tool which tells you exactly the problem. 16x2 display is cheap. Same is true for modern cars, they have fucking botnet built in, but still they will show you light and don't tell you anything about error code, despite having all means to do this (dashboard, radio...).

Have you ever heared about bluetooth OBDII readers?
They cost next to nothing and allow you to read out and delete error codes as well as to read out or log all sensor values on your phone.
Pretty much any car made since the mid 1990s has that feature.
Why not implement it on bikes with a warning light and a diagnostics port?

Only for e-bike drivetrains and maybe other associated electronic components.
Pretty much nobody would want that on a purely mechanical bicycle.
Also that port doesn't have to be OBDII, it could be some kind of CAN-bus or USB for all I care...

But c'mon. It is not 1990. Every car has like a tablet and screen in dashboard. This tool can be integrated in infotament system entirely. It would cost nothing to car manufaturer, except they can't sell $10 000 service tools.

I've never owned a vehicle that didn't have the check engine light on no matter what was wrong with it. Even bought a new car once and a year later it came on and they told me I would have to replace the thousand dollar computer module to get it to go away and it wasn't worth it because the car was running just fine.
