Something light like a road bike, but not optimized for racing.

Also the ideal urban exploration bike is a carbon fiber endurance road bike with hydraulic disc brakes and an sks s-blade mud guard. It should have a compact crankset, 48/34, and a 12-28 cassette. M540 pedals. 168.5 crank. 28c tires, tubeless of course. Gp5k obviously. ER1400 dicut db21s. The bars should be a little bit on the narrow side, but not crazy narrow - 420mm should do the trick.

cheap fixie or singlespeed, it'll still ride ok and if it gets stolen it won't be too expensive to replace. It's reliable and always works but if it breaks or flats, backup ride home is easily load bike on bus/train.

Inna city you want a light, minimalistic robust bike that rides fast and responsive on asphalt and in traffic, at the same time you need rims strong enough to take their daily curb stomping and tires that can wheel though broken bottles all day.

... which is an cooler late-2000s/early-2010s way of saying "rigid MTB with slicks" but also optionally drops and/or a rack. 26 or 29er (29er and 700c are both 622 bead diameter so tires are interchangeable if you find any listed as 700c x fuckwide for some reason)

You can change the gear ratio easily and adapt the bike to your terrain. I was more talking about the frame and furniture. Light and nimble frame so you can kick it around in stop and go all day, still sturdy enough to survive decades of daily use. slightly overbuilt tires, 1-2 brakes. all you need for urban cycling and it doesn't break the bank

Protip, put a cheap bmx plastic saddle on it and give the frame the most heinous and shoddy spray can color job you can and keep it dirty, it'll get stolen a lot less.

it's pretty flat around here. We have a few inclines, but nothing worse than 500m topping at 7%, and the odd bridge you have to get over, and 46x17 with spd pedals is quite enough to get up those without my knees exploding.

Plus, there's plenty of bicycle paths so riding is quite pleasant, and i have a CX bike with 700x32c tyres that I can take on my favourite trail (has gravel, tarmac, even some dirt/grass).

I think fixies are great for riding around in a city, as long as the city isn't TOO hilly at least.

Depending on how in depth and exploratory your explorations are, I can even see a fatbike being good for exploring the untraveled nooks and crannies and abandoned subway tunnels, storm canals, or what have you, of your city. Exploration is what fatbikes were originally made for.

Generally speaking, the ideal bike is the bike you love riding in the place you want to ride. As such this is very individual and there is no objective ideal.

Good quality 90s mtb weren't (((cheap))). You can get them cheap only if you can find a used one that's not 100% busted. And people would be throwing those things to thrash otherwise.

Get a early 2000s rigid hybrid instead. They're dope. Like Marin Larkspur.

That would be optimal urban explore bike. Fast, comfy, can do bumps and pot holes, good riding posture for following traffic and enjoying scenery. Cheap so no worries when left somewhere while you're exploring cafes, walking trails, shops etc.

Also new bikes like Kona Dew.
