True - email is not what it was in the 80s, and 90s, and most correspondence nowadays is electronic, but some things still need to be delivered in the "traditional" way - namely packages.
Even a slow messenger still beats fedex/ups/dhl, who will make the pickup, and deliver the next day. Having the option to deliver on the same day the pickup is made is something that "normal" courier services don't really offer, unless for exorbitant prices.
Granted - the main type of bike courier seen nowadays is delivering food in one of those ridiculous, cubical backpacks, but "classic" messengers still exist.
