Why are people who design bike paths so inconsiderate of people who actually want to get places? We have tight barriers similar to these on one spot on the local bike path network just because some hoons on dirt bikes did something bad one day, now we all have to suffer forever. I seriously wish they would stop treating us all like children (oh wait, bicycles = childrer, right?). It's these [eople who design those road crossings so you have to do a sharp 90 degree turn, to try to force you to look out for traffic before you cross the road, instead of expecting you to give way at the road crossing like anyone with a functioning brain should do. We live in a culture where we're deliberately stifling what people can do to try to save idiots from themselves, stop lawsuits, accidents etc. The cost is treating everybody like a child.

Poorly designed infrastructure dictates that desire paths will occur. Put the path where people want it and desire paths won't occur. Put the path in a stupid spot or put stupid barriers in front of it, and you get smart people bypassing the stupidity.

Two of the bike paths near me are in the most inconvenient places - one is on a road that has minimal traffic and no actual need for it, but also empties on both sides onto roads that are pretty hard-riding on. The other is on a 90 degree turn which has its apex in a valley and the entrances on top of hills. Bikes use it so infrequently people park on it. None of the schools have pike paths leading up to them. That town they're in has been going ultra-progressive for years, cranking up taxes to the point people leave to retire and approving new religious property for the people buying the devalued houses. All while crime has skyrocketed, decades-long landmark businesses have been closing and they drag their asses fixing the roads. The town leadership's hand-wringing supporters isolate themselves into section of town near a university where the roads are immaculate and the houses have 3 floors, you get suspicious looks if you aren't dressed like them and to top it off they don't even send their kids to the public schools. Schools which they demanded big ugly as fuck solar panels be installed in the front lawns of (and all of them broke from the snow the first year and had to be replaced due to being crummy chinese designs lol.)

That looks like a recreation center or large park, so probably to let golf carts or maintenance vehicles through while keeping idiots from driving their car in. I'd guess behind the camera is a parking lot with some sort of other path that links to the walkway in the distance where you're "supposed" to go but people take the shortcut.

in the UK there's so many places where there's a "Cyclists dismount" sign, like for a crossing or where the bike path is close to pedestrian paths. it's so ridiculous, they design everything for old grandmas on dutch bikes because they want to make the infrastructure accessible for everyone (which is obviously a good thing, the more people on bikes and not in cars the better) but forget that if you make the cycling routes constantly stop-start and full of barriers and stops and crossings then less people will cycle because they think it's too much of a hassle.

Copenhagen does it right, separated bike lanes with separate traffic lights and generally you can cross the city centre without stopping more than two or three times. All while separated from pedestrians and vehicles.
