Options for both a really low climbing gear and a high af mashing-down-a-hill gear using a freewheel and double crank?
Area has lots of big big hills that take a while to go up but also easy to spin out on the descent.
Alpine freewheel and multi-range setup?
How high should my big ring be & any FD changes needed?
I have a friction shimano exage FD & 130BCD cranks (can't change the cranks).

People tend to run 50/34 in hilly areas and 53/39 in flat areas but that's with cassette where you can go 11-25 or 11-28. Since freewheels tend to be a narrower range that may affect your choice in chainrings if you want to put more priority on either ascents or descents. All tradeoffs.
Since multiple freewheels tend to not go lower than 14t (let me know if you find one), yet can easily go to 28 or higher, I personally would be inclined to go with a bit bigger chainrings to make up for the lack of a small rear cog, meaning something like 52/36 or 53/39, assuming you can find chainrings with the proper BCD etc. But that's just me, I'm sure plenty of people would prefer the 50/34 even if their smallest cog is 14, if they're riding in mountainous areas.
Depends partly how many speeds your freewheel has. If it's a 7sp you could go 14-32 freewheel and 53/39 chainrings. That way your low gear is 39/32 1.22, whereas for comparison a 34/28 would also be 1.22. So by going from the standard 25 or 28 biggest rear cog up to a 32t rear cog, you're making up for going from 34 to 39 as your small ring. Just obviously means that if you are 14-32 with 7 cogs that's kinda big jumps, but it's worth it imo.
tl;dr I personally would steer you toward a 53/39 and 14-32 7sp, but plenty of other people would opt for a 50/34 and 14-28

rear cogs: that's going to depend on you; strength, stamina, weight, any loads you regularly carry, type of bike, whatever.
it's going to be either 11 or 14 on the high end, that's just all they make, afaik.
then 28, 32, or 34 on the low end, depends on what number of cog cassette your shifters index to, what is made within that constraint, and what suits you.

I live in the foothills of a large mountain chain, prolonged flats don't really exist and quite sharp inclines are common.
I had a 52/42 crank stock, changed to a 53/38 I had laying around, but didn't feel right until I got the 50/34 crank.
the biggest spread I could get for the rear was 14-34. I personally like the 1:1 low gear for the most killer climbs and don't miss any of the top-end of the previous cranks. bombing a hill, I mash the 50 with the 14 and never spin out, although none of the hills are particularly lengthy here.
but that's me and my experience.

to get that 14-34 spread, I use the Shimano Mega-range for 6 speed freewheel. works great but the 10-tooth jump from the 34 is really weird at first. however, now I don't really notice it. you just get used to spinning-out the 34 to shift to 24 and then everything else is normal.

I found some sketchy freewheels some taiwanese company (DNP aka Epoch) makes that come in 11-34 and 8/9/10/11 speed. Not cassettes, thread-on freewheels. Someone complains about them not lasting, something to do with the ratchet failing. But I wonder if he got a bad one or maybe they need an initial clean/lube or something.
FD might require me to change it. One of the LBS near me is very old and has a hoarder-esque backroom full of stuff they practically give away so i'm sure he has one.

Can't do compact cranks.
I got some special but a little old (octalink bb) ones I need round chainrings for but I only got spare biopace.
Thats why I was thinking of doing multi-range cause it gives me this huge climbing gear of like 34 in the back and... 28? 30? 32? in the front but then I can do 52 or 54 for the big ring.
Here the hills are really long and the land is like waves. The grades vary around but 5-7% is common but there's even steeper. The "flats" are the tops of the hills or in the valleys between them so they're still slight up and down.

Their own tool passed QC and doesn't fit their freewheel (out of spec).
And their stuff is made in a city near Shanghai, so taiwanese company that has chinese made parts. Cringey.
Appears the 8+ speed freewheels are made for ebikes since ebike axles are stronger. But you can get aftermarket cromo axles cheap for bikes so I wasn't worried about that.

Epoch FW seem like they're put on BSOs rarely, maybe for bikes sold in SEA/India/Aus or something and not Europe or USA. But they have been in business for 40 years and there are some old components (Derailleurs) listed on velobase that look cheap but aesthetic.

I think it's a company that lost the race in the 90s and survived by making crap in 2002.

yes, the screw on design of a FW means that the axle sits unsupported unlike a freehub where the bearings sit just inside the freehub body. they make 8 speed freewheels, but it does lead to more broken axles than a 5 speed.

and has a front chain wheel tooth difference of 20 teeth
so you could run 26 - 46

for freewheels normally 13 tooth is the smallest size

Right now I go out for 3 short, 1 hour rides a week. On these I average about 18mph. I also do 2 longer rides of about 4 hours, averaging 16.5mph.

Should I be aiming for the same average speed on the longer rides? I feel like I will need to eat a lot more in order to do that.

Ideally, depending on your goals and money a power meter is the best investment for long term gainz.

If gaining power is your goal on a budget, do intervalls (3x8 -> 4x8 -> 3x12 -> 2x20 > 3x20 progression or similar at a "hard but repeatable effort") in your 1-1,5 hour rides and do 1 long ride like you already do, but at a speed/effort that won't go down towards the end if possible.

3x8 means you do 3 times 8 minutes with some rest between. After doing this a few times, you will be able to handle the mental aspect of the efforts better too and can do longer stuff.

Add progressively harder warmup and ez cooldown too.

Hour long average efforts aren't the best method to improve.

If you really want to get into all the hard science behind it all, google Seiler, trainerroad podcast, some GCN videos. These will have different viewpoints on training though.

yeah according to this they're both 27" (630mm)
technically there are rim/tyre combo considerations but between 25 and 32 it's never an issue in reality. There may be some variations in how well a tyre corners around rim/tyre size combos within that small margin but they will all work.

It's just if you have clearance for it.

Learning to ride clipless taking a toll on my confidence in my riding ability and on my self esteem.
I've fallen over several times now, to the point of drawing blood. I've learned that I just can't unclip fast enough in an emergency situation, so I have to ride slower and clip out premeptively in anticipation.
So clipless has actually made me slower, and they are also less comfortable than flats. I see not advantages.

I'm starting to regret wasting money on the shoes and pedals.

I'm a complete brainlet and I think my chain is stretched, it doesn't seem to ride on the front or rear sprocket correctly, I can see daylight underneath the chain as it rotates.

Additionally, if I drop down into the lowest gears the chain hits something in the rear derailleur and gets jammed up.
Does this sound like the chain has stretched?

Check the valve hole in the rim for sharp edges, or any defect in your rim tape. the only way I found to combat it is to pre-emptively put patches on either side of the valve before using the tube to thicken it.
by any chance, are your wheels old-school 27" (iso 630, not new 27.5s)? everyone says 700c tube work for them, but maybe that's the cause?

Really depends on you - the rider is always the largest contributor to aerodynamic drag, so if this bike has a frame geo that you can't comfortably get into a good tuck on, then aero upgrades aren't going to make much difference. Assuming you can get into a tuck on this bike or are going to use aerobars on it, then sure, some deep section wheels will actually make a difference for you.

If tubeless you might have damaged the rim. At a minimum you will need to re-seat the bead.

If you're looking at steel or Ti, you should be able to find a good framebuilder near you. Then you work with them and a shop to get the bike specced out. Carbon is a bit more difficult at the 5k price point for a complete bike based on a frame made in the US, but Calfee's frames are really good and made in US, and start at $3k. Argonaut might be too pricey, but Alchemy's cheapest is around $6.5k for a complete with Ultegra. There's a handful of companies in Italy who make their own carbon frames, like Sarto, Passoni, and Cipo. I dunno where Festka is made. LOOK and TIME are still made in France. The TIME Alpe d'Huez 01 is on my short list for dream bikes once I reach a certain goal.

Good shops for high end road shit in North America include Above Category in San Francisco and Blacksmith Cycles in Montreal. There are a lot of really cool shops in Europe too.

Which pedals do you have? A lot of pedals have adjustable retention, which you can use to make it easier to exit the pedals. The main benefit of clipless is when you're going balls out on sprints and climbs, or when it's wet out and flats get slippy. If you're a more casual rider they're not really all that useful vs. flats.

Similar experience here. I bought a used bike which came with SPD-SL pedal and shoes that fit me. Absolutely amazing for bombing around the park and empty roads, but not that great for inner city riding where you might need to make a lot of unexpected stops. I never fell but I've had a few "oh shit I'm still clipped in" panic moments when coming to a stop after an intense effort or just zoning out ogling a hot jogger. I imagine it becomes second nature with enough practice, but I'd rather not practice out on the roads.

I ended up with half clips. Been using them for a a couple of weeks and really like them. From my noob perspective I find them them to be a great compromise between the "locked in" and secure feeling of clipless and the ability to remove your foot quickly like on a flat pedal.

Pretty new to cycling, I know in endurance sports you're usually supposed to build base miles first but if I already know sprinting is my strong suit and I have no plans to race anytime soon due to my experience and the virus, would it be a bad idea to train with the intent of improving my sprints on the bike or should I just focus on building base miles right now? Yeah my current wheels can handle an 11 speed cassette, I literally only want to upgrade the groupset because I feel ashamed using a Sora groupset. I've only thought to myself like twice "Man I could use more gear options" in my two months of owning the bike. And if I ever get into crit racing I'd probably need an entirely new bike anyway since this has endurance geometry. Maybe I should just get some new wheels and call it a day. Or just make this my future winter bike and leave it as is.

Being "ashamed" of your groupset is pure consoomerism and a retarded reason to buy anything. My main bike is 105 but the one I use on dirt trails is Claris and is still completely acceptable. Someday you may genuinely outgrow 18 speed and then it will make sense to upgrade, but it sounds like you need to build up way more cadence autism before that happens.

i entertained the thought of getting an allez sprint comp but the rim brake version looks to be gone? i draw the line at hydraulic brakes because they're definitely overkill for my needs and they're higher maintenance and people have issues with brake rub and squeal and the disc brake version is significantly more expensive. the rim brake version is probably overkill too because i literally only need to ride a few km in a mostly flat city. the stock wheels on the allez sprint comp are a bit cringe, only 23mm deep rims with 20/24 plain gauge spokes. the track bike build is much cheaper even with 31mm deep rims and 32/32 double butted spokes.

I don't know whether its my bb slowing me down or its that i just haven't ridden regularly for a month. It feels slugish pedalling, but downhill its just as fast as my old road bike (i built an all road steel bike with 35c semi slicks, old bike was carbon road bike with 28c and about one kg lighter). I've already done this before and it only spins about 2 revolutions if i give it a good push. This is a brand new shimano bottom bracket, maybe its because the bearings are not centered? Althrough the crank went in very smoothly with little force, and the cups threaded in easily. I didn't prep the frame or chase the bb threads because i feel its pointless, the machine threading is going to be far more accurate than the 20 iq literal retards that work at my lbs. I feel its just the shimano bracket being shit as the bearings outside the frame move with my finger about as sluggish as you'd expected spinning the cranks.

I think i just need to ride more, worst case scenario I'm losing like 7-10w. I only got to ride it twice so far, first time was with super deflated tires due to latex inner tubes and me not checking the pressure before leaving. The last time i did anything with the bb was 4 days ago when i took it apart to make sure everything was okay after its first install in a new frame, because ocd. I installed the inside cup the wrong way round it turns out, fixed that and it made the bottom bracket rotate significantly better, from 1 revolution to 2 with the same force. I have not washed the bike since. There's no weird noises, it feels smooth, but it just feels a bit sluggish, but im not sure whether that's the bb or just me not having trained in a month. Its a shimano ultegra hollowtech ii bb if that helps.

AFAIK SPD cleats are SPD cleats and there is little to no variation among them. You will want to keep in mind that road SPD-SLs are not the same as SPDs.

Pretty sure it's all riveted together. it's a tourney something 3x. I'd rather get something from shimano/sram than to break my neck with some chinese knock-off cranks. Man this shit is way more confusing than computer parts.
So anyway the BB on my bike is what I guess is referred to as square taper.

Because where I live all we have is one really easy XC-ish course and the 1x8 is even overkill for it. The 3x at the front looks ugly, is heavy, makes cleaning the mud off my bike after a ride more of a pain and I sometimes scrape the bottom when going down a particular drop on the aformentioned XC course and I hate that feeling. As for city trashing my tires are 2.4 x-kings and I'm pretty lazy so spinning out won't be a problem I don't think.

replace the chain and the cassette and see if it still slips in which case replace the chainring too
or if the chainring is clearly visibly fucked replace that too. post a good pic of the drivetrain if you want opinions on that. Sometimes rings can seem quite bad and be ok but if the chain is actually slipping then the cassette is 100% fucked.

you size a chain by running it over the big + big cogs, not through the mechs, and then add 2 links so in the most extreme bad crosschaining gear combo it just doesn't explode.

they're called "cables", btw.
if the cables are rusty, the inside of the cable housing is rusty, too, so replace both if that's the case. shimano cable kits are good, people recommend jagwire a lot, too.

Is it normal to have weak legs when you first start cycling? I've been at it for over a week now and usually cruise in 50/21 for all of my zone 2 rides.

Also, how the fuck do you guys eat so much??? After my first long ride I was like 2,000 calories short of my TDEE at the end of the day. Even on days when I'm only burning 1,000 calories it's hard to eat enough.

I've been looking at hybrid bikes to get back into biking and I have a (probably stupid) question for everyone with a drop bar.
If I don't bend down to use the bottom parts of the handlebars is it essentially the same as a straight bar? Here's the deal, I've been looking at a lot of bikes and I've been ignoring the drop bar ones altogether but a lot of bikes I'm looking at aren't available and I don't have any stores to go to to find a bike.
Or am I still going to be hunched over my handlebars either way?
I feel like I'm ignoring a lot of good road bikes by only looking at hybrids.

Buy one based on how many gears you have in back: 7 speed, 8 speed, etc. If there wasn't anything wrong with the previous one (back when it was new, at least) size the new one by laying them next to each other and matching up the number of links. It isn't. The default hand position on drop bars is now the hoods, and when you have your hands on the hoods, your arms are rotated so that your chest is more open for breathing and your body is positioned to recruit more muscles for pedaling. Then you have the positions on the bar tops so that you can change things up, typically for climbing, or when you're going at a chill pase. The drops position is now mostly used for sprinting and descending, and it's something you'll want to get used to, at least for the latter, as you get a lot more control.

might also be that there is friction in the cable run somewhere and it's acting like a clutch
or that the cable is clamped incorrectly which changes the pull ratio. I had that happen on an alivio mech which was wierd because the right place to clamp didn't seem like the obvious place.

People who think otherwise are just coming from shitty rim brakes and hold up this complete redesign of tech just because they're too fucking stupid to spend less than $50 on setting up their brakes properly. Well shitty discs exist too. And you make some also marginal concessions to have discs rather than rim.
And yes carbon rims are a valid exception but they're just that and it's simply not relevant to the vast majority of roadies and certainly not roadies and casuals.

Not the guy you're whining at but I've generally just used the shimano road pads on rim brakes, but memepads aren't going to even remotely bridge the gap from great cable-actuated disk brakes to great hydraulic disk brakes. Your braking force will be fine but not as good and your actuation/sensitivity/control will be fine but not as good. Furthermore rims with braking surfaces are objectively worse in every way than rims with no braking surface. This is slightly mitigated by the fact that you are compromising on wheel stiffness but in practice this has no real-world consequences outside of, say, olympic velodrome time trails where you're not allowed to use things that will fuck up the track in a crash anyway.

Technology has left you behind, and you're such a simp that you've gotten future shock from a braking solution that has been around since 1902.

Personally I don't think it is as marginal as you seem to think. Conventional wisdom holds that you upgrade your points of contact with the bike first; saddle and so on. Brake feel is one of your key interfaces with the bike and it happens when you and it are under the most stress/external force.

Something has caused a lack of parallelism between the rotor and the caliper. This could be a shit hub, misaligned fork or suspension lowers, bent dropouts, etc.
You have to set the bike up so it's vertical with the wheel and brake removed and use a straightedge on each of the dropouts. This will extend any misalignment to make it more visible.
If the fork isn't steel you're probably fucked and need a new one. If you crashed it's fucked and you need a new one.

While surely there is some vanity sizing involved in bicycle tire sizing, the main determiner of how your tire is going to caliper up is the internal width of the wheelset. 19mm internal with 25mm looks like an icecream cone while a wider rimset with have a more aero profile. >>1496466

If they are friction shifters they will probably work fine. You will need to spread the rear dropouts ~2 mm each side to fit the 130mm 9-speed hub, but that's no biggie. If the current shifters are indexed you can easily replace the rear shifter with a 9-speed indexed shifter.

your 9 speed wheel is probably wider than the 6spd one, but if it's a steel frame you can just open it up and jam it in fine

People are also usually going to wider tires when they get disc brakes and that makes a improvement in braking due to the larger contact patch. In terms of outright braking power and modulation, I've found hydro discs and good rim brakes (dual pivot calipers with good pads, fuck cantis) to be samey in dry weather, with aluminum rims. The wet weather performance is a different story but I don't really think it's a huge deal for most riders because most riders nope the fuck out of riding on wet days or even when it's overcast.
However, the hydro discs require a lot less hand strength to actuate, which is where they really win out. On MTBs, one or two finger braking is important. On road bikes, it's nice to not have to go into the drops and deathgrip. I frequently ride a few fast descents that are rough enough where that's a problem.

Sometimes you can loosen caliper mount bolts, adjust caliper position/angle, then tighten bolts back down.
also sometimes calipers have an adapter or whatever so there's two sets of bolts you can do this with.

Riding on the tops (the upper flat part on a drop handlebar) is not as nice as riding on flat bars because the grip is much narrower, giving less control/stability, and no quick access to brakes. But you can also ride with hands on the hoods (levers).
There's some good hybrid recommendations in topnigger, link in OP.
If you like hybrids but want drop bars, consider a cyclocross bike like Salsa Vaya.

Polyamide tape (kapton) is fucking great for rim tape. Cheap as fuck, super thin so it makes it easier for your tires to go on, super lightweight so weight weenies are happy, the adhesive is strong enough to not shift around but you can remove it easily and it doesn't leave a mess, and you can use it for tubeless. Literally no downsides to it.

yep i found it insufferable that stores are charging 2 euros for a single rim strip so i did more research on strapping tape and things like that and came across kapton tape. and you can actually find kapton tape and similar poly tape on german amazon unlike some of the 3M, tyvek etc specialty tape.
