When you say biking people might mistake you for a motorbiker. To cycle can also have other meanings. The safest choice for being understood is bicycling.

Where I'm from, If you're riding a bicycle you're a 'cyclist' and you are 'cycling'.
In English I would say 'riding', or 'riding a bicycle' if it's not clear from the context.

I think it depends where you live, but where I live each term has a different connotation:

"Biking" means casually riding a bicycle.

"Cycling" means deliberately riding a bicycle as an athletic hobby/sport or for transport - people who casually ride bikes 3 times per year in the summer months don't call themselves "cyclists." Similarly, "mountain biking" means deliberately practicing that sport in a serious way.

"Bicycling" and "bicyclist" are formal and neutral terms, used in government, business, or news media to describe the activity that doesn't imply any further details about the people who are riding bikes.

"biking" and "biker" implies motorcycles

"cycling/cyclist" and "bicycling/bicyclist" implies bicycles

The only exceptions are when you're specifically adding "mountain" to the front as in "mountain bikes" or "mountain biking", both of which are clear; and when you're a literal child talking about riding bikes. We know 10 year olds can't ride motorcycles, so bicycles are implied when they talk about riding bikes.

Cycling is the correct term in English. A bunch of anti-cyclists have banded together and decided that it's a pejorative so you hear idiots saying "bicyclist" like they're trying to avoid offending someone.

I only ride mountain and bmx and always say "I mountain bike". ESPECIALLY ON TINDER. Women need to know i still own a truck and a sports car and instead mountain biking is something I do to stay healthy and isnt my primary form of transportation.

Then your completely mistaken at my intentions. My possession of a truck that I use as my daily, outdoor activity vehicle and tower/hauler lets women know i have dependable transportation and that I'm not some barely employed bum who will leech off of them. The sports car is there to let them know I'm well off enough to buy an expensive toy while living in a pretty decent area. MTB and car trackdays fill enough of my schedule to also let a woman know that I have hobbies Im very dedicated to and unlikely to budge on. Basically its telling a woman "I dont really need a woman in my life so dont waste my time."

I've only ever been in two serious relationships both ending for one of the reasons I mentioned earlier. One girl got upset that I was financially and emotionally independent enough to where I didn't require her constantly and was upset that she never felt "needed". and the other tried to make me spend a ridiculous amount of time with her and tried to get me to sell the rx-7 and lessen my number of trips to the bike park. The first broke up with me and I broke up with the second. Its a shame, was mildly considering asking the first to marry me as well.
