There's more in place than that map lets on--already completed spur routes, etc.
I've gone from Cincinnati to DC, stopped in Parma (Cleveland) to pick up my friend along the way. It was awesome. 95% of the route was bike trails, though of course we wandered through cities as we came to them. I'd never been to DC before, and it's packed with cool stuff.
The only hitch/underdeveloped area was around Steubenville/Weirton--we took a ~2 mile illegal detour, by following a (functioning) railroad instead of the highway.
