What is your local bike shop like? Is the owner nice? Is it well priced? Can you get good stuff?
One thing I've noticed is that the small LBSs are very cliquey and have little patience for newbies. I can understand why, as they are probably inundated with retarded questions.
Mine in particular is run by a crotchety old man that takes fucking days to get to you, so if you pay a visit, you'll be waiting at least 30 minutes to served. All the while he is taking his sweet time chatting to friends who hang around doing fuck all. Also all of his gear is beyond a rip-off and you can easily find shit online for 2/3rds of the price.
The issue is that he's the only specialist for touring bikes and has a ton of practical knowledge - only issues is that he's an asshole.
