Are mechanical disc brakes an upgrade from rim brakes? I don't much care about the responsiveness of the brake, just the stopping power.

Does anybody have any numbers about biking up hills on ebikes? I'm a commuter who, according to www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html, produces about 100W at 6% grade at 5mph or so. So why do so many reviewers insist that a 250W ebike is insufficient to go up such hills? By my calculations, I should be able to throttle only and double my speed.

An ebike probably weighs at least double whatever you've got now, so that's not helping, but if your standards are that low for speed there's no reason it wouldn't be fine.

Is a top speed of 30 mph during a sprint average or below average for a beginner? I can't seem to get past 30 yet and I've been cycling for 3 weeks. (I assume my form is shit because I always feel extremely unstable when sprinting.)

I can hit about 60 mph with a 63x11 on the flats with my road bike. I can hold this for a few miles before I burn out. I always end up running out of gearing with a 55t when in route to the trails.. Can it be identified on this photograph if the chainring needs to be replaced due to wear?

You're close to the weight limit for most production bikes. Obviously ultralight racing equipment is a bad idea.

Learn how to true your wheels, as it's the most likely failure. Take anon's advice on proper inflation as well.

If you want more margin of safety, any entry level mountain bike should be able to take a one foot drop easily under your gigantic ass, so it should be a piece of calorie loaded cake to survive flat roads.

any normal person can do 250+ watts for AN HOUR STRAIGHT
doing 500+ watts up shorter hills shouldn't be an issue when you have a decent bike and clipless pedals and learned the proper technique and gotten moderately fit

You need to build a belt drive from the ground up because you can't disconnect the belt to thread it thru the rear triangle like you can with a chain. Belt drive frames have a piece in the seatstay that opens up. You would need to consult a framebuilder to get yours modded.

You could machine a custom pulley to on a freehub or something but that's way more complex.

theres a few incredibly steep hills near me that even in a car you have to put the pedal down a decent bit to not lose a massive amount of speed going up it

Figure out approximately what the gradient of the hill is with a topographic map or something, then plug that and whatever else it asks for into the second link. Move the slider to see how speed varies with power, which basically measures effort required.

Assuming you're in decent shape but not necessarily an athlete,you can roughly interpret watts as:
200 - not easy but not too bad
250 - not bad for a few minutes
300 - hard to maintain for too long
350 - pretty hard
400+ - maybe for a minute at the most

Depends on weight and terrain, but generally speaking around 80-100 psi. Also the min-max values should be printed on your tires; inflate them to somewhere inside that range, go for a ride, see how they feel, and adjust accordingly.

The point is it's fucking stupid that I have to pay $400 for this when longer cranks are more of a pro thing anyway, since pros are mostly men, tall men at that, and shorter cranks are for normies. If they're making cranks in 2.5mm increments or 5mm increments, the 5mm increment makes more sense when you get into beanpole lanklet freakshow cranks and you should make the smaller increments for the shorter cranks, not the other way around

I've gotten lots of calls about stripped cranks from putting the wrong side pedals on the wrong side arms. Will a 9/16 x 20 tpi pair of pedal taps be enough to correct the issue? I am of the understanding that the 5/8 x 24 tpi taps are the ones that you put helicoils in after with red loctite.

I wouldn't worry about it, I just wouldn't haul ass and would ease over any bumps in the road. I've ridden home on a broken spoke, then to the shop the next day, then home to install the new one more than once.

Absolutely, go for it. Remember to true it before riding, popping a spoke throws the wheel out of true. Just enough so that it doesn't rub on your brake pads.

ya, if you do the installation you'll need to true the wheel after, but nothing too bad. if you get your new wheels and drop off the one for repair, the shop will include it with the spoke replacement.

could be a busted bearing, but really it's impossible to diagnose over the internet.
bearings cost nothing, putting them back in with some grease is pretty easy, readjusting the cones against the locknuts is not hard but you have to work in small increments and re-do it a lot to get it right.
but if the cones or bearing races are torn up then you need a new cone or new pedals if the race is blown.
paying a shop to do it will cost something but I have no idea what.

Why is everyone so super obsessed with frame geometry on road bikes although you can adjust whatever position you'd like?
Eg. you easily make a race bike out of an endurance type frame by using a forward pointing seat post and a longer downpointing stem. So why get hung up there when buying a bike?

buying a new set of wheels/tires for gravel and having trouble matching the cassette up with the one I currently have.

My bike has an 11-34T CS-HG50 9 speed casette, but I can't find those for sale anywhere. Even Shimano doesn't list 11-34 as an option. Any reason I couldn't use the 11-34T HG400 instead? Just looking for something that wouldn't require adjusting the derailleur

I'm looking to get into mountain biking for exercise and for a hobby. I'm not too interested in doing crazy jumps or super fast downhill treks, but I would like to be able to eventually do small jumps and ride rougher terrain that isn't a paved road.

A good MTB/gravel hybrid with flat bar is just as good and can be kitted for road/distance use. Get disc brakes, hydraulic is nice but mechanical is good as well. Make sure to get a good drivetrain set and crank, at least deore, can be an older stock. You can extend your flat bar with bar ends and aero bars if needed. Get 35-42mm tyres, not overly knobbly ones.
Can be had for $400-500 total.

Looks like the cheapest road bike Trek makes is a Domane AL2 at $850. There's a thing on this page to let you check if it's in stock at your shop, but they look sold out online so if it isn't I don't think they'd be able to order it. i figure that once i have my new bike i could go on some training rides and not just the super short distance bike courier type rides. there are some sweet 40 km/h speed limit roads with bus lanes (legal to cycle on where i live) and bike highways nearby.

but should i buy a mini pump and bring a spare inner tube and tools with me? there are less busy places where i could stop and replace the inner tube, not like in the middle of the city where it would be very awkward to stop and fix a flat instead of just walking home.

but where do you draw the line of how far you're comfortable to ride without being able to fix your bike? people say they go thousands of km without flatting their gp 5000 tires and i think maybe walking 3-4 km wouldn't be that bad if i do get a flat.

But to answer your original question yes, you should always carry at least a spare tube and a mini pump with you, and ideally a patch kit. You never know when your ride is gonna get longer than you anticipated.

fair enough, you do you but i don't think i would get into full on road cycling. i don't want to spend all day riding, i'm not an outdoors person. an urban crit-style circuit rather than an endurance tour would seem to make more sense to train for short bike courier type rides. i don't think a stiff and aggressive track bike with a cheap aliexpress carbon saddle will be comfy on longer rides anyway.

i think the argument is that your tires should have massive grip on pavement and your front brake should be strong enough to lock up the front wheel, raise the rear wheel and send you over the bars, so if you're braking hard the rear wheel will just skid and not contribute to your stopping power

but i'm not sure if your rear wheel will be unloaded enough for you to go over the bars if you have a low center of gravity and brace with your arms

braking with both is better in an emergency stop, GCN demonstrated this in one of their tutorial videos

I had two very distinctive bikes stolen out of my garage last winter and I was able to provide the police with lots of pictures and documentation for both. One of the bikes went to a pawn shop where it got recognized, the police got that one back and allowed me to come pick it up from the police station a couple days later. Depends on the bike I think - if it's a generic mass produced bike and you don't have the serial number then there's not really anything the police can do. If you do have the serial number it's worth telling the police, because pawn shops are required to put serials into a database and it can actually be found that way.

A lot depends on where you are, what kind of hazards you have. How easy is it to get a sag wagon or bus with bicycle rack to a full repair station and home. if you change the bars to ones that put the controls in a very different place you may need longer cables. you should recable anyway though they look badly perished.

99% sure it's a 25.4 clamp bar. You can measure it though with some calipers. Most modern bars will be 31.8 but the old standard is still common enough.

buy a tub of wheel bearing grease from an autoparts store, or some bicycle grease, and some kerosene, and clean and regrease the bolt on the stem and the surface where the bar clamps

I'm gonna say you COULD but drops most likely won't work with the hybrid/old mtb geometry.

You're better off getting flat bars with a medium (10-20°) amount of sweep and a matching stem and get to save on at least the shifters. Maybe get barends.
If you're handy and patient and lean on the used market/co-ops/planetx's clearance section it should be possible to get that bike fully restored to functionally-like-new condition for 100 quid or less. If it seems like you'll significantly spend more than that just get something else.

In my experience pretty much everything requires at least a bit of caliper adjustment. Centerlocks won't apply mechanical leverage to the disc in the same way that 6-bolts will so the shape of the disc will be ever-so-slightly different. I don't have a lot of experience getting a perfect tune with discs but so far it seems like black magic to me.

I think the right way to do it isn't necessarily with shims. There is some amount of play on disc mounts so that you can just loosen up the bolts, apply pressure to the levers, and tighten up the bolts so that everything is centered?

but like I said, I don't have the magic touch and don't know how to get it.

My bike feels a bit small. The height is alright but holding the bar feels cramped, too tight. My dads bike feels good, his wheelbase is 110cm, mine is 105cm.
My bar stem is 90mm and the bar is 25.4mm diameter. The only stem I found that is not a pleb variable one is 130mm.
Do you think it would be good to go for? Also what difference does the longer stem make in the handling?
The bike is a sort of cross MTB XC with 37-40c tyres.
