Got this Motobecane Cafe single speed on the way. I'm pretty stoked about it. Has a carbon fork, so much I already want to get for it. Needed something for a daily beater that I can ride around here. Used to really only ride fixed and did for about 7 years but it's all fun and games until you really need to stop and skidding just bugged my bum knee.

most metals i9n bike fab are made with glue too, it's not a pure piece, they use the offcuts and glue them together around on the inside layers its like plywood but metal and the shear strength is significantly less than when they mine the sheets from the ground but those pieces mostly get used only in industrial applications so metal and plastic really its not much difference they arell glued together

I've done some reading up on carbon fiber being used for forks, seems like it's a toss up and always seem to get "What about aluminum and steel forks?". Since it's from a place like Bikesdirect, I will def be checking out the forks condition when it gets here. I'm not new to bikes by any means. I was more impressed with the offering of a carbon fiber fork on a entry-level city beater bike. I don't know much about Motobecane as a bike company, but seems that from what I've seen on their site is that they aren't cheap, maybe mid-level, their lowest track/single speed being about $795 cromoly frame and fork, but not with a carbon one. Bikesdirect says that this is the "Cafe" 2020 model, but I paid $360 for it and the bike itself is not listed on Motobecanes site. Could Bikesdirect be re-badging off brand china bikes and selling them?

I've never ordered from them until recently. From the research I've done they seem to have good reviews and I've lurked some forums where I've seen people saying really nothing that negative. This is the first bike I've ever bought on-line from years just going to bike shops and getting a bike. I sold my old fixed gear a while back and wanted something to ride around on that wasn't going to kill my account for right now and seemed "ok".

They re-badge off brand china bikes and sell them. Nobody would have any issue with that because there's a ton of companies that do that, except the way they market themselves is kinda shady:

1. Using old defunct brands to mislead the naive consoomer into thinking they're sticking it to the man by skipping the LBS (except the same naive consoomer ends up dragging it to the LBS anyway because they're afraid to touch a hex wrench)

2. Sleazy sales tactics straight off a used car lot like, "was $1800, limited time only $500 but you MUST BUY NOW" (and the bike clearly could never be worth $1800 even in a million years because it's generic hiten with a single tiagra part and the rest is some skeezy promax shit)

I'm sure some hambini fedora is going to say they're death traps, they're not death traps they're just kinda trashy and riding one screams "gullible rube" and a lot of people would be too embarrassed to ride one

Well, that's a bummer, wish I would have known. If anything, if it comes and I don't like it, I'll just get rid of it. It's not like it's a $1,000 Bianchi or anything, or like I'm upgrading that much, I rode a Windsor "The Hour". I did just send an e-mail to Motobecane about it and hopefully they get back to me and see what they have to say about it. it's a single speed, and they're one of the most popular vendors for single speeds because none of this shit matters for single speeds. there's hardly anything to break and they're pretty much the opposite of cool. I wouldn't worry about it. just don't buy a grabbel bike from there and expect to roll with the cool unracers who spend 2 hours before every ride picking out the perfect "not a cyclist" outfit and making sure their socks don't match their gloves because THIS IS NOT A RACE

Have your bicycle drivetrain tools ready to dismantle your shit and grease it yourself out of the box. Also have a saddle that doesn't suck ready. Also pedals.

Riding bikes with a slammed stem and drop bars gets uncomfortable after a while. When I got my first Nitto risers I loved them didn't fuck with bullhorns or drops again.

I have the drop bar version. Straight wall 6061 frame, aluminum steerer and drop outs with carbon legs on the fork. It's not a light bike even if it's a fixie but it's sturdy. Brand new it weighed 10kg (22lbs). It's heavy but solid, it's been my delivery bike for the past 3 years. It's seen a lot.

different bearings are shot because I have to ride it in all weather. Pedal bearings click, headset bearings stick in some angles, chain is stretched to hell, chainring and rear sprocket is wearing out, electrical tape on the ripped portions of bar tape. I keep regular maintenance but it wears out fast from the abuse. The new wheels have nice bearings so happy about that but the rest is tired.

I had the same frame on a different model single speed from BD.

I recommend applying grease/anti-seize on the seatpost as soon as you get it. Do the same for all the bolts and threads on the frame when you have the time.

Check the hubs for how tight they are, I had to loosen mine up a bit. Also consider ordering a set of tubes right away, both that came with the bike popped from just hitting potholes/curbs on my commute fairly quickly. Those tires look better than what mine came with but probably still something you'll want to replace soon.

TL;DR the steel frame wants to rust more than other steelies from experience, grease and maintenance is your friend.

the area is weird, Palmer Square, between Logan and Wicker. Some parts are run down and others are really nice, it's a small neighborhood, kinda hipster because of Logan and Wicker but not bad overall. Its stretch of Milwaukee has comfy restaurants and bars. I guess the run down photo does represent chicago, kinda broken but comfy with pockets of good and bad

Yeah I like it. I ride on gravel most of the time. The tires are 37c, which I think is overkill for the type of gravel I ride on. I’ll probably go with 27 or 30 when it’s time to change tires.
