had a belt drive singlespeed as my only bike for around a year between 2009-2011.

tension maintenance was a pain, there is no easy or affordable way to change ratios and the sand/silt/grit on my coastal towpath commute ate my first belt in under 10,000km. I replaced the belt for about 100 quid (ouch) and sold the bike to some other early adopter numbskull for almost what I paid for it.

now I have 6 nice bikes and none of them are belt drive.

I have pic related. It’s meme tier tech and heavier than a standard drivetrain, but it works well and I’ve never had to do any maintenance commuting with it for over 2 years. Fairly silent as well especially compared to most of the rusty bikes and chains around here.

I will at all times choose chains over belts because they are simply more duable. I'd love to buy an old lexus, but they all have fuckin timing belts that need to be replaced for $1000 every 100k miles.

Unlike most here, I've worn out a Gates Centertrack system. It does what it says on the tin. For a high-end bike where mud tolerance is important a Pinion / Gates combo is the only way. It might also be good for fixies. For my winter city utility needs I found it more trouble than it was worth and replaced it with regular 8-speed chain and hot wax lube. To do it again I would probably go with a Dutch style full chain case, but that's a big ball of compromises too.

They're not supposed to stretch, but the parts do wear into each other a bit when they're new so they effectively do stretch. Maintaining tension for the first year was a big pain. I think the tension killed my BB bearings. Usually silent but sometimes squeak pretty loud, especially in the cold. Felt a bit stiff in the cold too.

Not saying they're terrible, they do what they say they do, but it's a limited application.
