very new to clipless pedals

I just bought pic and have installed them on my bike. I got cleats, three-pin shoes, and I'm about to ride on them for the first time. Is there anything I should know about using clipless pedals beyond the most basic clip-in/clip-out knowledge? I really don't want to get hit by a car :(

check and re-tighten your cleat bolts several times after rides
they loosen for a while and can fall out
however, be very careful about over-tightening them the torque required is pretty minimal
it's quite easy to strip both the threads and the bolt heads

If you fuck up clipping in while going from a stop across an intersection, you can soft pedal with your fucked foot and put normal power into your clipped in foot just to clear the intersection. After you're clear, then you can start looking down and futzing around with your other pedal. Intersections are dangerous for everyone so it's best to spend as little time as possible in them.

always twist
have a plan as you approach a situation that may require a surprise unclip as to which leg you'll use
this becomes natural over time
always twist
if you've got a red light ahead, instead of zooming up at top speed and dismounting, practice unclipping slower or faster on different feet as you roll to a stop
alternate feet for a while until you've got a feel for things
remember that the cleat position always needs some adjustment to dial in your fit

You're going to fall at least once when you start out, accept it, but try to do it early and while you are near grass or something to grab until you get used to unclipping safely. Try to make sure when you unclip it's instinctive that you lean towards that foot. With cleats you are likely to have an embarrassing fall, rather than a catestrophic slip at 40mph, you are less likely to have a high speed accident. Start unclipping well before you intend to stop and learn to trackstand a bit once you become more comfortable.

fucking this, wish somebody told me this before I unleashed the full power of my autism on my spd cleat bolts. Ended up having to drill out the screws.
To add to this, always use grease on the bolts to prevent corrosion

the other thing i suggest is that one day you go back to flat pedals for a while and perfect trackstanding
once you can do it no hands or get a drink bottle out of your cage while doing it, you'll be comfortable doing it clipped in

and it makes riding clipless a lot better. You don't have to do it at every light like a tryhard but it's a very helpful arrow in the quiver.

Two bolt shoes are always big and clunky and ugly, and the pedals look like something you would buy from RadioShack. Three bolt shoes are svelte and the pedals are as well. The choice is obvious.

Probably because crabon on a pedal is stupid easy, it's not like it has to be hollow or anything. And even very high end bearings aren't that expensive in the grand scheme of things.
