I don't think I like road cycling anymore edition.

Last few road rides I've gone have just been... Boring. I still love urban riding, but going out in kit to ride for distance is just a drag.

Used to use this for the longest time.
Been without a bike for about four years now. Want a road bike, is the specialized allez overkill? Never had a road bike.
Plan on riding daily a total of 16 miles commuting to work and also would like to try going on rides

I ride downhill, regular.MTB, park, and track, plus urban riding. Not lacking variety. Road cycling just doesn't do it without a destination.

And group rides only ever mean five minutes at said destination with a group of boomers. Firnedly as they are the age gap is noticeable.

Ironically my local shop that has bikepackers on staff tends to drive 50-75 miles out of town to ride 15-20 miles into the mountains on gravel.

They call it bikepacking. I guess they do camp the night.

I was road focused too but made the switch to bike packing when I moved for school. The road riding groups where I live tend to be cliquey boomers unfortunately.

Why do my down tube shifters not stay in the gear I want occasionally. A few rotations after newly selected gear the rear will jump to a easier gear

here is an photo showing the friction loading screw
when the small black lever is lined up with the F molded into the plastic the shifter is in friction mode
while the SIS detents are not engaged
only a corrugated friction plate holds the lever in position against the spring tension applied by the Rear derailleur
use a large flat blade screw driver to very slowly turn the friction screw clockwise to increase the friction

the other side for the FD just has a plastic cap
this can be turned by hand or with an open ended Wrench
or with a strait jaw channel lock if you want to make fine adjustments

Probably correct. There is this smaller knob that rotates clockwise. It seems the problem isn't as bad if I rotate it some, but usually comes back within a mile. I've just been a little paranoid about cranking it down to tight and damaging something since I didn't know it's function.

triple with bar end is a good setup but so is having STI shifters. I'd stick with it. Cost you a lot less money to just change the crank.

unless you are going someplace super hilly or are carrying 50 lbs of gear I wouldn't get a triple. Your current setup looks good but some prefer bar ends on touring rigs. The logic is a little flawed (STI shifters are claimed to be more likely to break if the bike tips over).

Is there anyplace in the UK you'd really need a granny with such a wide cassette?

Bars are only like 50 cm wide, and the wheels are just debadged retrospec. Whole build has maybe $450 in it (frame was had for $200, the wheels were a nice find at a flea market for $30, new). It's definitely for the city and can filter fine, and when it eventually cracks from curb hops, well, just cost of admission.

I think roadies have been dipping their toes in off road since cyclo-cross bikes were popular 4 or 5 years back, and ofc gravel bikes for the last 3 or so years. It makes sense that some would want to take it further.

Sub-compact is the cheapest,/simplest I guess, but I don't mind spending a bit more to get the versatility.

The cable routing is cleannnnn, love that double wrapped cable all the way into the body. Also I must not have been paying attention to shit lately because that shimano drivetrain looks badass. I get wholesale on SRAM, and I like it for road stuff, but I'm always curious to try Shimano MTB stuff(ridden plenty of Shimano road, don't feel like I'm missing out there).

2018 model, guy said it was just hanging on his shop wall collecting dust. Told me he'd let me go home with her put together and tuned up for 1200, I didn't think I got off that easy, tell me more about it.

I would measure it but unfortunately I have deconstructed it and boxed it up to return ASAP. The Scott is a 54cm, so that seems to be my proper size anyway, but the 56cm seemed much larger than by more than the distance. Maybe you could educate me more on the sizing though, I'd still like to know more about it.

what is your personal ground-balls measurement? Is it less than that 812mm?
If you bought a bike online, and didn't check the standover height they clearly tell you against that measurement. And then you say it's not a 56, but don't seem to have actually measured it.

I really am curious if they actually gave you the wrong size or if you're just oddly proportioned and not competent enough to buy things online without handholding. I'd stop slagging off bikesdirect anon. This sounds like it might be your fault. I don't mean to rag on you so hard but this is kind of baffling to me. Measuring things isn't difficult. And it's pretty commonly said that Bikesdirect is good but you have to kind of have a basic degree of common sense and do some things for yourself.

For 58cm it's 831. That's consistent with other similar bikes.

Practice bike skill.
-learn to wheelie or loop out (pedal the bike out from under you and land on your feet)
-learn to kinda stoppie
-learn to bunny hop
-practice hopping off and bailing in a grassy field
-practice being out of the saddle for long periods.

Finally, just get a suspension fork for your fat bike. You really don't need a full suspension unless you're wanting to eek out extra speed at the very highest levels of the sport, and they make almost all bike skills harder.

Here's my story. I've always been more or a "running" guy, but after watching Golden Boy I said, "fuck it, I have a 10yo bike gathering dust in the garage". I tried to do the basic maintenance by watching YouTube tutorials, and now it works (excepting for the front derailleur and its grip shifter)

Pic related is not my bike, but it is almost identical. Just different pedals and grips. I know it is pretty basic (it costed 150€ to my parents 10 years ago), but I would like to know what can you tell me about it. The drive train is a cheap Shimano Tourney SiS, and in the front suspension it is written "Zoom", btw.

Yesterday I tested it in the mountains, and I am surprised it survived 30-40 km/h downhills on uneven terrain with rocks and branches.

I wouldn't call it trash. Obviously it cannot be compared to a proper full-sus MTB, but if it lived it's at least structurally sound enough for his skill and trails.

That being said I wouldn't put any money on it either besides lubing bearings, a not-rusty chain, brake pads if they've gone hard, and contact points if necessary (saddle, grips, and pedals can be had cheap and be transferred to a nicer bike later). Maybe a different spring in the rear if it's way too soft but that'd be kinda hard to get at a price that makes sense for that bike.
Tires only if they've gone bad and I would stick to the ~$20 tier because they wouldn't really be the main limiting factor as long as the knobbiness is right for the terrain.

Also chop the seatpost to be flush at the bottom once you've figured out your seat height because it seems like it gets on the way of the suspension and whatever help it may be. Happy trails, and hope you decide to get into it on a nice bike later on.

I'd clean and sell it and buy something that is worth putting time and money into. Bikes just for fucking on are pretty cheap. If you are completely broke and don't own any basic tools, you might stick to it though. I bought a 90s rigid meme mtb and while it's extremely fun to work and ride on, I put a lot of time into it and money into tools and lube and all that shit.
Also, once you find some nice trails, going back to running is extremely annoying, especially since there are no events to train for right now. I dread every run I have to do these days and wish I could just sit on my bike.

There's a number of reasons, but what it boils down to is that I test road a bunch of different ebikes over the course of a couple years and this is the one I most enjoyed. For one thing this was, at the time that I bought it, pretty much the only ebike available with a double chainring.

My mountain bike is a 1x9 conversion. Is comfy not having to deal with an FD.

For mtb is fine (mine has 34t 1x with a 11s 11-42) buy for hybrids/gravel/touring etc you need the 2x to be fast on tarmac and go easy off road IMO (mine, 50-34 and 11-40)

I imagine if you're strong enough to top out the high range on tarmac, you're also strong enough to not need the low range of a 2x system on gravel.

I'm rebuilding it right now. 1X11 XT, Paul Egr Components brake levers and motolite brakes (with Kool Stops). I could not get the stem out of the head tube, or I would be changing it. Plus it's a 1" steerer so if I cut it out I would haft replace the forks, and I didn't see any very good replacements.

It can be ridiculously difficult, but persevere. and try not to bend the fork in the process.
You definitely don't want to replace the fork.
That's also not true about cutting it out either.
What you do, is cut it horizontally right below the weld, so it's protruding, and then make two cuts down with a keyhole hacksaw and pry it out with vice grip pliers. I would have bleeding hands and atleast a week of daily soaking and grinding smashing and stuff before resorting to that but if you have to do it, you have to do it.

You're just weak. While riding a bike you're only going to be comfortable once you have developed enough strength to balance a lot of your bodyweight against the force of your pedaling. Until then it won't matter what saddle you have.

The good news is that this doesn't take most people very long, and you will usually start to feel more comfortable on the bike after a handful of rides.

Once you have been riding for a month or two you can start thinking about saddle upgrades. The less padding on a saddle, the better; it is not a "seat" and you don't sit in it like a chair. It's a counterbalancing aid that, like your handlebars, you will be touching as lightly as possible most of the time.

I loosened the nut and was able to clean and re-lube the headset bearings, top and bottom. The body of the stem is stuck, the wedge moves up and down. I turned the bike upside down and soaked it with penetrating lubricant for 2 days. Then beat on it with a rubber mallet for maybe an hour. It moved slightly from side to side. Then I turned it back upside down and soaked it for 2 more days in vinegar. Still wouldn't come out, still moved a little, side to side. That's when I decided maybe this stem would continue to be ok on this bike.

Not necessarily. Some of it has to do with core strength. If you're coasting a significant proportion of the time your ass is going to hurt, but if you're coasting briefly to take a drink or go over a rough patch or something, usually you have your core engaged and you're still semi-balancing.

it's aero and for all day riding. lets my arms be nice and long, straight and vertically aligned. Works best with STIs so you can control everything important on your bike from one hand position - like if you swap right break leaver to front, and run a 1x11/12/13, you canride with only one hand and use the other for holding onto cars or calling people

It's a bike made for climbing uphill. the drops point up in the back to act like horns, you lean forward and kiss the tire like midosuji, it really really makes going uphill for the 1000th time that day easier, to the point of making it almost adventageous to flat level biking with the shorter wheel distance and effort level compared to traditional 700c skinnys.

with barcon indexed' shifters (suntour clickys), i'll be able to upgrade to a nicer rear wheel and front wheel, maybe try building them myself

you have compact drops, not ideal imo, but you know how you can grab the front to bend your arms to hold, but you also gain access to the sti's completely- i believe it's better for the levers to be forward and accessable from the very drops-ist.

Just finished another build, I had a slightly older Kona frame crack and instead of waiting months for a warranty swing arm replacement, opted to just get a discount on a full 2020 Process. Spent this weekend swapping literally just about everything on it with parts I had on my hardtail. Only thing I left on it were bearings and the crank (the stylo didn't feel worth the extra 15 minutes of work). Only got a pretty mild shakedown ride in, need to take it to somewhere with real descents soon. Pretty stoked on it though, most notable upgrades are the Fox fork, obviously, and the Hope E4 brakes.

Bonus, also built this up for my father with some of the parts from the warrantied frame and flea market/swap meet finds. Frame is some budget Polish offering, cheapest thing I could find that took boost wheels and a tapered fork. Not bad for $250, just wish it took a zero stack headset instead of integrated, though I'm sure my dad will stop riding before the headtube actually gets deformed.

listen dude go back to shilling jet fuel parts to 12 year olds on shitty complete bikes or scamming the elderly, you know fuck nothing about the nuances or history of bmx tricks at all, brakes are super versatile and open up so many more tricks than not running any. Front brakes have dropped off in recent years but they're still just as fun as they've always been you cockbent ninny, maybe they'd work better if you knew how to do your job because last time i put front brakes on a bmx they grabbed juuuuust fine with the shittiest pads i had.

Not really sure what I was aiming for this build but I am planning to do a long distance and put racks/bags on it. This is a japanese surplus frame and the previous owner put a disc brake adaptors which makes it ugly. I looked for the frame model and it is a 2007 CX900

Parts:
Tiagra RD with 11-28t cogs
Taiwanese mtb 36t crankset
Dt Swiss R460 with 35c kenda tires
Shimano 600 brake levers
Bar end shifters
Semi flared drops from a local brand that was probably manufactured in taiwan and distributed as local brand here in manila
25.4 seatpost with shim to fit 26.8 shim because 26.8 seat post is hard to find

My current issue with this build is the seat post keeps on sliding after riding a couple of hours and the drop bar angle is too aggressive as I just want to ride relaxed, I am thinking of putting a fork extender

I need comments on what needs to be changed on my bike
