Uhwmpe is 2x the strength.of.kevlar, why is it so underutilized?

Seems like a potential boon for the industry. Cheap, made from easily compressed powder into moulds, no epoxy and layering required.
The only real downside is it's very slippery, but its self lubricating an would make amazing chains and cassettes.Berd makes their spokes out of it. It might make for amazing bearings. And what's more , unlike carbon or titanium, it's non conductive. I could envision a bike totally made from it that you could ride during a thunderstorm. It might make great rims, but it's slippery nature might make it hard to take anything besides a foam tire.
You could also make molded truss designs like that delta7 arantix at a fraction of the labor time.

So I had an idea for direct drive (chainless, penny farthing style)
A bike with two 700 wheels or what have you, but the back wheel is placed slightly farther back, and where your crank usually is sits a small third wheel with direct drive. Thoughts?
Wondering if Alibaba wizards could maybe assemble one with magnetic bearings.

Also, are there any super strong bearings I can use for a bike? Was thinking of going with the theme of insane load tolerance just because

I want to do some casual bike trekking on my commuter bike. Since it's old and banged up, it's due for upgrades. I have also been cucked by bike mechanics in the past (here in the Netherlands they don't give a shit about details or finishing), so I am determined to do my own maintenance from now on.

The bike has a quill stem, and considering my hip is busted, I'd like to try to see how aggressive of a position I can cycle in, so I went for a quill stem adapter, and an adjustable stem.

The problem is that, as far as I can see, there's no way to properly secure this particular stem to the adapter from the top, since the stem has a long screw, but the adapter has no place for that screw to go.

This leaves me with two choices:

1. Just brace the adapter with the new stem. I would imagine that there'd be a risk of the stem coming off?
2. Return it to the seller.

Wat do?

Not really sure from just the picture. On a normal stem that long screw would pass through the stem cap and engage some threads in the star nut and afaik it's only mechanical purpose is to keep the stem cap from falling off, though I could be mistaken.

You should be able to secure the stem to the quill adapter with the two lower bolts.

the bolts i circled are what secure the stem
the top bolt is just for adjusting pre-load on a threadless headset, which you don't have. So that bolt does nothing. Once those circled bolts are done up, with a threadless headset, the preload bolt is also doing nothing.
so what you're worried about, is not an issue.

however i still don't think it's really compatible, because the stem you bought is odd, it basically has spacers built in, and so the mating surface is considerably longer than on your quill adapter. like yeah it probably would work, but it's a horrendously inelegant solution and marginally sketchy.

good on you for wanting to work on your bike too, but this is really superficial crap. I bet your old stem worked fine. Try overhauling the wheel hubs, replacing the chain, getting new brake pads, recabling, you know -real shit-. And fuck adjustable stems. It's just another thing to potentially fail and creak.

I got a new bar coming. Since the grips were coming apart, I got new grips and bar. The bar is 31.8mm, so is the stem.

Old stem was a quill stem. The dutch weather and questionable quality did a number on its bolts. When I tried to tightening it a little (it was quite loose), I stripped the rusty bolts very easily. As such, it can't really be tightened or adjusted anymore. The old quill stem was rather high, as installed from the factory, so the new one will be a little lower, all things considered. I see what you mean on the inelegant part of the solution, though.

when you install it, lightly grease all those threads, and the stem-bar mating surface, and heavily grease the quill stem wedge

I have been seriously considering that, but there are only so many things I can do. Bike has a nexus 8 hub, gates belt drive and roller brakes. It does not seem like there's much flexibility for me to change things around from here. Here's my reasoning:

1. Brakes: My version of the Nexus 8 hub does not support mounting disc brakes. I don't think rim brakes would be much of an upgrade.
2. Chain. Non issue. I have a belt, which works out great in this rainy weather. It does limit me to single speeds or hubs, though.
3. The hub. Shit's expensive to replace, and the current one is chugging along nicely.

I do find my current bike quite limiting when it comes to upgrading it. I'll probably be buying one with derailleur in the near future.

what, your rim is out of true, or your frame is bent, or your hubs have play in them?
probably the first one
with rim brakes it means you get brake rub or poor braking from opening them too far so that's not good
otherwise, a small wobble is ok, obviously it's not great but generally ok.

it can be like black magic to fix in a way that stays fixed.
biggest issue to riding an untrue rim is it might get worse

I think it is generally worth paying someone to true them but a lot of mechs won't do a great job. Try find someone older in a racefag shop and don't bat an eye at slightly higher prices.

Also I can't endorse a memebelt bike. The low-maintenance aspect is enticing but eventually you'll have to replace the belt or one of the proprietary parts that work with it, and that'll just be a headache. I'd go for a regular IGH instead, like an Alfine. Or just a regular derailleur bike... the moment you have a baby nobody will touch those bikes ever again.

You would be wrong on that assumption. We live in the Netherlands, and we mostly commute and go about our daily business by bike for anything within a 10-12 KM radius from our home.

When the baby comes, I was thinking of slapping a baby seat on the bike and install a sturdy two-legged stand, to improve stability. People commuting with babies in their bikes is an extremely common occurrence around these parts. Alternatively, I was considering an electric cargo bike.

I run a Wahoo Elemnt, and the gps maps include paths and even offroad trails. It also retails for as much as most cheap /n/iggers seem to want to spend on their entire bike off of craigslist. No, cheaper ones can't do the same thing - a cheap cycling computer will be less useful than running free apps on your phone. Go big or just mount your phone and a powerpack to keep it charged.

does 0.5kg (0.3kg at the rims) make that much difference on your wheels?

mathematically the weight doesn't seem to make a great difference either in acceleration or in light 'climbing' (5% grade for 150 meters).

the lighter rims are 25mm wide externally and i will have 25mm tires so maybe there is a slight aero advantage from the matching width at lower yaw angles but other than that they're barely better than a box section rim when it comes to aero. supposedly there is a handling benefit from having wider rims but i think maybe it has more to do with the air volume and i doubt the tires were originally designed to be stretched very wide.

the heavier wheels are narrower but deeper and have a much nicer profile which will certainly be more aero at higher yaw angles. i think the aero watts could be worth more than the weight penalty in theory. also the frontal area would be lower because the tires would sit narrower.

maybe it's a little nicer to use because ergonomics but for real cunt stuck on pedals you slip a pipe over anyway and that's easier to do with a regular spanner.

they are more comfortable than a regular wrench and you are less likely to scrap your knuckles also. If you buy a cheap kit of bike tools, there is ussually one there. I don't think I would buy one separadtely.

Is it normal to feel pronounced hip pain on one side after raising your saddle height a little bit?

Using that heel method, I raised my saddle by 1 cm and now I'm walking like an old man after two days of trying this new saddle height, plus my average power has gone down a little. I think it is making it harder for me to actually sit back on the saddle and is forcing me to sit further up than before, maybe I lack the flexibility? I have like 1.5 cm to go to reach the ideal saddle height. Maybe it's just time to get a new saddle, even at the previous height I had issues with it being too narrow or me just not being able to sit back.

This year I've been having tremendous neck pain when riding slowly and for 50km on my road bike. Never had neck pain when going hard/training on previous years or doing 150km rides.
I was thinking about lowering my steam by taking a few spacers but now I'm not so sure.
How can I solve it? Maybe my neck muscles lost some strength?

Are clipless pedals really worth it? Currently I have the Shimano 600 PD6400 with toe clips. The biggest problem is that you can`t walk with them, right?. I often go to a supermarket when riding and that would be really awkward I think.

There steerer tube came like that I guess I was supposed to cut it down but as you can see not even my stem would fit on top. It also seems to be too short for a tube extender. Sucks I wasted my money and waited a month for Taiwan shipping.

Why? The steerer tube is like that so you can set the stem and bar height with spacers.
I'd suggest not to touch your bike anymore and bring it in to your LBS to do the modifications you want.

Just get a 15mm that's long enough to give you the leverage you need, and thin enough to fit. If it doesn't have the rubber coated handle it might hurt your hand, but you can just wear a glove or hold it with a wash cloth.

Depends on how wide your bottom bracket shell is. Looks like if it's 68mm wide you add 3 and if it's 73mm you add one. If it's a road bike it's probably 68 and a mountain bike is probably 73. The manual is here, see page 11 for how to arrange the spacers:

Probably due to being out of true, but could be a very loose hub, or could be that the wheel is not properly secured in the dropouts.
If wheels are out of true it depends, if it's a minor wobble it's not that big a deal. If it's a major wobble I could imagine it would cause some wear, maybe cause some spoke fatigue that could cause a spoke to break. And if you have rim brakes, it could rub on the brake pads, wearing them down faster, and making pedaling less efficient.

Make the cager's insurance buy you a new bike. Have you checked all the bearings (headset, bottom bracket, and hubs) to make sure they are still tight? It could be that the rim is bent, or just that spoke tension is off, or both. Wheel could be trued potentially, but if the rim is severely bent then it may need to be replaced.

If you notice that there's something in between your brake pads and the rim surface take the time to stop and remove it. After rides in dirty conditions take the time to clean the wheels to remove dirt.

Newfag reporting. I've been learning how to true my wheels lately and finally got it down but I don't have a truing rack. Can I true a wheel by tightening the V-brakes until they rub, truing until they don't, rinse and repeat?

disassemble your stem and seatpost and clean all the bolts and mating surfaces and lightly grease them and reinstall it's probably not the bottom bracket and it's good to do anyway

do the same for your chainrings and your fd clamp bolt

replace the bottom bracket if it's particularly rough when you lift the chain off the chainring and spin it

What the fuck does my stem and seatpost have to do with my fucking BB?
That was me initial thought before even finishing the first line.
For the record, I'm very sure it actually is the BB. Stem and seatpost are too far away for them to cause the noise and I have no front derailleur.
I'm probably just gonna see if applying some grease helps. If not it's replacing the BB I guess.

I have had more success truing with the clicky part of a ballpoint pen.

The problem with brake truing is that the brakes can and will stop the wheel before the point of maximum deviation, so it is really very difficult to ever get a decent true.

Got some frayed cables coming from the dynamo. Is there such thing as a miraculous tape that won't quickly peel off on its own?. It's annoying because it's rainy where I live. Wouldn't like to short circuit the light.

the correct fix is heat shrink tubing though

either way, go to an actual electrical trade supplies shop and you can buy the good version of both
then get something like this or a heat gun to shrink the tubing if you do it properly and you can also make creme brule and smoke weed in the wind with it

Thanks anons! I'll first give the self-amalgamating tape a try. It seems like shrink wrap is a little more complicated, since you need to get the diameter / shrink ratio right. Also, while I do have one of those burners for creme brulee, I don't really feel confident in getting it too close to the bike.

If the tape fails, I'll try wiith the heat shrink tubing.

aside from offroading (and even then it would mostly be from mud not dry dirt) usually the only way grit gets on the brake pads is via water spraying the grit up there during rain.
after I ride in the rain, I get home and hold the hose over each brake pad and around either side of the rims. then bounce the bike on the tires to get off the excess. I don't spray it since it's not necessary and putting water anywhere near the grease in the hubs is iffy anyway. just let the water flow over it and gravity washes all the grit and black gunk away.
you can also squeeze water out of your bottle onto those areas if you're away from home.

rather than fooling with the brakes, you can strap zipties to the seat-stays level with the brake track and point them backwards first, then spin the wheel and turn them inwards until the just brush the rims, start truing, and repeat until you're straight. getting slight adjustments out of your pads is harder and the compound slows your spin down too much

You need the plastic but for the BBR-60, which has a slightly smaller outer diameter than the standard. Don't worry about having to buy the spacer, since every Shimano BB I've seen that needs it has one in the box.

The problem now is "compact sizing". Basically the top tube is no longer horizontal. A sloped top tube allows more adjustability for people with long arms + short legs. It allows manufacturers to make less size options since it's easier to fit people of different sizes on the same frame. That's why your posted bike is "55cm" despite not having that measurement on the bike

Most bicycles will list "standover height" on the product detail page. If you can stand over that, it will probably fit you. Link above explains the difference between compact and traditional sizing. super glue is too hard and inflexible for this use. Aquaseal, duraseal, vulcanizing glue from your patch kit, hell even rubber cement is probably a better idea. But leave it for now, and re glue it if it comes loose.

I use a heavily cut down Origin8 Strongbow on my Birdy and I'm very happy with the bar. I want to move the brakes to bar end reverse lever and switch the shifter to thumb shifters (bar end shifter mounted on Paul Components thumbies) to free up bar space on the ends but the comfort of having hand positions.

Stans and Spank are pretty much the option for cheaper decent wheels. DT Swiss makes some complete wheels on the cheaper end also.
Don’t waste your money on high end rims, they’re ultimately wear items. Unless they have a *real* lifetime warranty that literally explicitly covers being just a dumbshit. Fancy hubs are preference, high engagement is hit or miss depending on your suspension, you might have massive chain growth that could cause kickback, and super loud hubs are honestly just a passing trend. I like DT Swiss hubs, any of them with the star ratchet system, since pawls can break if you’re a fat fuck (and the offset pawl design of some high-engagement hubs are even less durable than normal non-offset pawls)

iunno... it still bulges a bit. Seems kinda ok though. I'm gonna cycle somewhere with some gear/bags next weekend so i'll change it for that with a wide touring tire. Ride it this week and see what happens. And then switch to the zaffiro after.

I think you'll be able to use the same hub to go from 9 to 10, but not to 11 or 12. I retrofitted a similar bike with Shimano 1x10, using XT, RD and shifters and a Zee 36t crankset with a narrow-wide chainring. Works brilliantly. But I'd upgrade brakes and fork before drivetrain. Especially brakes.

If you've got money to burn and don't mind putting meme parts on your bike get a special power meter crankset or wheels. If you don't mind a tiny, negligible amount of inaccuracy in exchange for better aesthetics and a much lower price then get a Stages crank/crankset. I just got back from a bike ride at night with an almost-full moon and fireworks going off

I stopped halfway through to put on fingerless gloves because my hands were starting to hurt

then when I got home I went to stop my GPS watch and it was already stopped. Apparently I bumped the stop button when I put on the gloves

I felt angry at first but I feel better now because it was a beautiful ride and I can still enjoy it without having it logged

I do think expensive bars are worthwhile, especially nitto, but the manufacturing costs for your aliexpress $30 bar and your $100 surly bar are probably quite similar.

you could just get a narrow-wide 9/10spd ring with the correct bcd and some shorter 1x chainring bolts and then take off your fd and left shifter and chainrings and get a new chain.

that XT is quite nice.

hell i'd just leave the triple though. It's a damn cool bike.
The upgrade i'd do is get a titanium rack like pic related and zip tie a little metal basket on it, or get a carradice saddlebag to loop into your brooks.

How about a Benotto Silver Eagle? They're still made and also have a similar "work bike for the masses" heritage.
They'll also sell you the frameset if you don't want to deal with rod brakes or the gaudiness of the modernized touring bike versions.

to put it in perspective, a decent entry level new mtb is around $600 and that gets you -bad- front suspension and -ok- hydraulic brakes and something that's really quite good for technical riding. Worth it if you can afford it.

if you can't afford that, it's probably better to get a higher end chromoly steel 90s bike with older tech, rim brakes, rigid fork and do it up a bit. Those are really very fun to ride and can often be had quite cheaply. Parts for them are cheap too and they are easy to work on. Pic related is mine. Imo they're actually -more- fun to ride than a more competent modern bike, on easy-ish trails.

the crank isn't the new standard, or even the old standard, it's held with a cotter pin. this tech is fucking terrible it sucks so bad it's a massive cunt to work on fuck cotter pins so hard we've had better standards common even on relatively cheap bikes for over 50 years now.

I do find the really low trail swept fork look and the probably sucks sprung brooks saddle ripoff quite charming though

Full bike $180ish usd, frameset, $40. I guess that on the full bike there's some hipster tax since poor people in Mexico have moved on to beat up 90s MTBs, but if you can sort out the logistics of getting a frameset to your country it sounds like a fun project to put together with shiny unracer knockoffs to dab on grantfags with a $250 bike or something.

a normal 15 mm open end wrench is about 155 mm long
where as a pedal wrench is around 285 mm long and a little thinner
because its thinner and has greater leverage more stress is placed upon the contact points
after extented use the working surfaces of pedal wreches can become dented by the bolt corners

technique does help a lot more than strength
leverage and weight can do a bit of work before other methods are needed
except if you encounter a pedal thread that has not been greased and has gone rusty
then the hammers and cheater pipes come into play
if that does not work penetrating oil or heat can be used

>tldr grease the pedal threads and a 15 mm is fine
>just watch out for getting shredded by exposed chain wheel teeth on the drive side

I'm questioning my tire situation. I'm running donnelly x'plor MSO 36x700c for commuting on a paved path mostly, some loose gravel and dirt, a little grass and curb hopping. I'm 225, 6'4". The tires are rated for 40-60psi. I still feel like I'm riding flat when I'm on hard surface. I got a flat last week, no spikes in the tire, and I've been a little paranoid since, and when I keep looking down, it definitely looks low, borderline pinch flat.

What are my options, besides lose 40lbs? Is it actually okay? Should I be overpressuring? Just get new tires? If so, which to trade for that won't kill my wallet if I can resell these?

Also fuck it's hard to take a of your back tire while you're riding...

are you actually hoping curbs? because at your weight with those tires I don't think that's a good idea for your rims.

your pressure seems low. I am 190lb and I ride my 700x35 tires at 60psi which seems low. try 70psi.

your tires are cheapish and probably stock on the bike. you need to invest in better tries and they're all going to be more expensive. if you are broke and getting puncture flats you could get some thorn resistant inner tubes or tire liners. they will make your bike slowler but it won't cost much

all the high end road bike tires have tremendous grip, if it's raining a lot cars will slow down more and block your path anyway, but you can probably push it quite a bit but you don't know for sure if maybe there's a patch of gravel or oil or ice on the road or your cornering skill isn't that great and so on, the review sites don't do any equivalent of a skid pad test because you'll normally have more grip than you'll ever need on the road

Also >>1510832 I absolutely hate those kinds of V-brakes. I understand why they are used and their benefits over the cheaper kinds but fuck them anyway. So many extra parts, extra wire, and extra articulation. They're a pain in the ass to tighten properly too.

not him but some of them did have suspension but they're not any good by modern standards and are probably in a state of disrepair. the ones without suspension are more like a poorfag alternative to modern gravel bikes, while modern mountain bikes are more "hardcore" than what normies use them for. giant makes some decent hardtails and commuter bikes for well below $1000.

Did you allow it to dry for ten minutes brpefore you set off? My experience with wax was that the cheapo white lightning wax dry lube wax lasted like 30 miles
