In addition to that there was a time where twin-engine planes where not allowed to fly longer distances over the sea.
These days airlines went to mostly direct conections and except for a few routes it's realy hard to reliably fill these planes.
And if they aren't filled to their limit all the time, they are expensive to run.
So nowerdays airlines look more for smaller planes like the 737 and A320 NEO that can service these direct conections efficiently.
Only cargo airlines want big planes these days as they still operate hub and spoke models and can reliably fill these planes.
But they have plenty planes on the used market, so demand for new 747 is next to nonexistant.
