What the fuck is Seattle thinking?

They are building a rail system that will be 116 miles/186km long with 95% of it being fully grade separated yet they are using fucking trams?

Seattle is copying LA who copied San Francisco. The difference is that Seattle and LA make it work because their trains have their own right-of-way whereas SF's Muni does not. The former two can upgrade to heavier trains at any point regardless, even with bridges considered as those are built beyond what was really needed (which is a separate problem in American transit contracting).

The thing to keep in mind is that all the major rail expansions in Seattle have required voter approval in regional referendums.

This means that the projects being proposed have to be attractive to the median voter across the region (a person who almost certainly isn't a transit user). This means that costs are front of mind when they put together packages for votes. Dollar amounts need to be palatable to the voting public.

The first vote in 1995 was for a $6.7 billion package but this was rejected. They came back in 1996 with a $3.9 billion package that got approved. One of the ways they managed to keep costs down was to make a large stretch of track run at-grade rather than elevated.

I will say, the trains are a lot bigger in person. They are big boys. A lot bigger and imposing than your average North American streetcar.

Seattle had a proposal for 100% grade separated monorail system. Cheaper than what they have now and self funded (no subsidies). But the rail system won. Not because it is better but it is a tax revenue and gibs for contractors agency.

The people voted for the monorail. But Sound Transit kept telling them "No. This is not what you want." Eventually, the sheep complied.

Jfc this is a dumb post. The monorail is pitifully inefficient at moving people and made absolutely no sense to use as a large scale, far reaching transit system. Link is overwhelmingly grade separated with only a few exception spots and all of the new lines being built and in planning are grade separated.

If there was a common type/specifications that could benefit from economies of scale, they could find more than just a niche role. But as it is now almost every monorail system is bespoke, which raises prices

It's way cheaper when you can build stops like this, instead of actual train stations. These carriages look absolutely huge anyway, so is there even any difference in the end. I can't find how wide these things are, does anybody know?

You're just judging from the appearance of the railcars, what does it matter if they look like trams so long as they have enough capacity and speed?
In Switzerland many heavy rail lines now use those modular EMUs if demand doesn't warrant larger, more expensive train sets.

here's our current light rail service. we have one line. it goes from the airport in the south up to the university. it's utter garbage, i only use it if going to the airport which is hardly ever. imagine a city the size of seattle having ONE line. Everything here revolves around the bus, despite having the perfect geography for train (instead of sprawling everywhere, geographic limitations, IE the water, mean everything should be serviceable with only a few lines.) trains also perform better than bus for the hills and rain we deal with.

That doesn't answer my question as the maps contain no scale. 116 miles end to end or 116 miles total? Because tram cars are fully sufficient for a network that mostly in urban surroundings at 30 to 45 mph.

Metro trains are often fairly narrow. After some googling, I think these Seattle light rails are 2,65 meters wide, which isn't far off many subway trains. For instance, in Paris they are only 2,45 meters, and in Stockholm 2,9 meters. I don't think capacity will become a problem with these

Yeah I think that's a pretty standard width for trains, our trains are the same size. The subway trains in this town are actually the same width, which I think is pretty unusual
