>>1516724maintenance doesn't get votes, it isn't sexy enough. we can't have anything nice because the voters in this country are imbeciles. they get star eyed with new constrx projects, but never want to maintain what they already have because the taxes will "cost too much". so they build new shit, will have even MORE maintenance to be responsible for... and this instant gratification mindset started with the boomers. they're like children. they dont' want to clean and repair their old toys, they want new toys and they want you to pay for them. then those toys are busted up in a few years and they throw another tantrum. the fundamental issue is the car centric construction is unsustainable. the sprawl suburban model of residential construction costs like an order of magnitude more PER PERSON to build and maintain than compact walkable development. think of all the power lines, water pipes, sewage, natural gas, roads, trash service, gas stations, grocery stores, emergency service, etc.
>>1516742it's exactly so, american capitalism focuses on current spending, spend spend spend, instead of thinking to enrich the people and make a strong nation that can endure for hundreds of years. not with gibs, but with a solid foundation of a stable, prosperous country, of having systems that are functional. instead of building a strong country that will last and be a good place to live, that will give rise to a strong prosperous people, american economic policy focuses on line go up. it's all about makign more & more sales and the stock price. and at the end we're left with a pile of junky trash no one can afford to do anything to maintain, and the whole shit of it crumbles. when for the same effort or less we could have just built it right from the beginning. it's a system designed to encourage waste, corner cutting, and junky excess. at the end the people are left with nothing, nothing at all. but we made a line go up for a while. it's the growth model of cancer.
