Where the FUCK is my personal human powered aircraft (HPA) ?? World record was 1988, THIRTY TWO YEARS ago when Deadalus 88 flew 115 km in a couple hours. Think of all the advancements in lightweight materials since then.

Can you generate 2.9W/kg for hours at a time to keep something like the Daedalus 88 in the air? I read the docs on it and that's what's required, although I imagine to get it off the ground requires more than that initially, even with help.
If you are an Unracer then you could just forget about it. To generate 2.9W/kg for extended periods of time takes racer-level training plus more than a little natural talent in the VO2max department.

Not that much of a difference, and Daedalus 88 was insanely fragile.

They aren't much lighter today.
However with a few advancements in aerodynamics and composites you may get it down to 2-2,5 W/kg.
That's not insanely much, but nothing I'd want to sustain during a commute.

The more I learned and got into aviation, the less appealing the idea of HPA became. It's a ton of work, and you can't even enjoy the flying aspect.

If your goals are to enjoy flying cheaply, there are better options. Gliding, both unpowered and powered, ultralights, or something like the Rutan Long EZ.

Honestly, rather than having an HPA, I'd rather find a way to get my kickscooter or bicycle to get a decent glide. Still can only go down, but sometimes I see a small canal and I think "Damn, I wish I could hop over that." It's probably a childish idea, but it makes me wonder.

because then you will be using what was before "dead weight" and get way more distance than you would from a single battery pack

That's not exactly what happens when you run out of power in a plane.
You just start losing altitude, about half a meter per second I'd guess for a human powered plane.

2.9W/kg is a cheat measure, because you also need the weight of the plane.
300W is pretty bad just to stay airborne, on top of whatever bullshit you need to ascend to start flying.
