I hate RTD [Reason To Drive] so much. Every winter there are so many delays and late trains. Denver gets snow and cold weather but they can never manage. Monthly passes are also $200.00. Fuck light rail

It's cheaper to build in more ways than one. Light rail vehicles can make tighter turns, climb steeper incline, and draw less electricity (lower power infrastructure build cost). Heavy rail requiring shallower curves and inclines usually means that it has to go underground or be elevated, and existing buildings have to be demolished and rebuilt around the underground tunnel to allow the rail to make 90 degree turns at intersections since dual-track heavy rail's minimum turning radius doesn't fit inside anything less than 6-lane by 6-lane intersection. Very deep tunneling can avoid building demolitions, but it's very expensive and the stations end up 8 floors underground.

people don't realize how incredibly expensive subways are. They're great and all but they really ought to be built only if it's absolutely necessary and justified.

Any smart country would be building more metros, but in the US we can't seem to muster up the will to do so. Unless the federal government wills itself to put the money up for it, regional transportation authorities will probably keep building LRT as the best possible option.

one of the advantages is integration into the street grid (which is nice with priority)
usually less regulations and less standards
germany has some cases of integration with (otherwise mostly defunct) heavy rail lines
also you can use them for cargo shipping into the city

if you want the rails in the street itself you don't require a seperate ROW for trams so there are some that are (legaly) fit for heavy rail and tram operation
