I want and need an e-bike for commuting.

The OEM electric bicycles are not only expensive but ugly, but what really turns me down on them is all proprietary parts - once battery is kapput your only option is OEM battery.

so it goes...everyday pauperization with planned obsolence.
So what is the best DIY kit to set up an ebike, rear wheel with electric hub seems like the most simple option, but obviously not best performance wise.

Any experience with DIY ebikes?

Crafting your own battery isn't worth the effort I think (at least if it's a singular case and you don't have tools and material available anyway because you an electro nerd)
If you buy quality brand bike there will be battery replacents available most likely.

I built a cheapo rear hub 1000 watter with a steel chinese frame. Cost me about $1000 AUD all up. Took a lot of tweaking and rewiring to make it reliable, and the throttle response is still very sloppy, but it goes like hell. Nice little super lightweight motorbike.

Mid drive is great, but I don't think bike chains can really handle big power. And 250W is just boring to me - I'd rather ride a real bike.

Can you even retrofit an ebike motor into BB? I cant imagine how would a front pull on a bicycle feel like, how does it behave in that way?

this seems super simple to instal. Are there any advantages to BB compared to rear wheel? Ive only tried BB, but Im concerned on the wear of the chain if I hot rod it, how does mid engine handle compared to rear wheel hub engine?

There isn't much advantage over buying a new OEM battery then.

More instable at higher speeds, sucks for steep uphill and dirt tracks because it lacks traction, either little torque or too much stress for the fork and the headset

Mostly torque because the BB motor works over the chain you can chose the gear ratios in the same way you do for yourself. Also you can still easily change wheels and tires.
Disadvantage is more wear on the chain and the sprockets.

Basically if you live in EU or anywhere else with 250Watt limit and have many hills to climb the BBmotor is preferable. If you live in the USA or somewhere else without 250Watt limit a 750W hubmotor should be sufficient for all your needs.

'Crafting your own battery' is only feasible if you buy some off-the-shelf battery pack and adapt it. Most people don't have the skill-set to deal with designing a Li+ battery pack, and I say that because you need a charge/discharge controller that can handle it safely. Li+ cells, if not treated properly with regards to charging and discharging, get very, very upset and do things like short out internally, overheat, and catch on fire. I'm not saying it's impossible for an end-user to do, but unlike older technologies (lead-acid, NIMH, NiCad) Li+ cells are much more finicky. You'd be better off buying a pack that already has the electronics necessary built into it.

ok, fine, I WOULD FIND A USE FOR IT. Is that good enough? I do not want to sweat everyday as I do now and it would open more possibilities of long distance commuting, is that good enough?

Do you "need" slicks for commuting? or can you commute with low tier OEM mtb tires? You know the answer. E-bike is optimal for many situations especially since Im considering becoming a messenger or sometimes simply not in the mood to pedal, pedal is for joyrides, ebikes are more suited for utility.

So max wattage you can get is only viable in a hub motor? I thought BB motors had the highest wattage. Wear on chain and sprocket is an issue especially since BB motors mostly come in 1x10 and higher, its a recipe for high wear, proprietary cranksets are meh as well.

nah they all just use 18650 cells. You just open the case, take out the old cells, put in new ones. May have to get someone to spot weld them into the correct array but it's not rocket science and five, ten years from now it will probably be a standard bike shop service.

This is good to hear, might as well go for a used ebike specific frame, than retrofiting a mtb with a new set, price comes out very close that way. Im simply vary of obsoletness.

how resistant are the systems to rain and shock? I expect them to last, but I doubt that a longterm shock to battery or water damage is completly unavoidable, right now its too early to claim longterm durability since most of those bikes just sit in sheds, but Im talking leaving it overnight locked on a rainy street.

Hard to say. Obviously a lot is going to depend on the quality of engineering and manufacture. I'm sure the $1000 chinkshit specials are going to deteriorate more rapidly than an ebike from the big 3, but they tech is still so new to the market that there is really no metric or data available to judge something like that. I trust Giant and Cannondale to design their shit properly. Spesh and trek maybe not quite so much.

We'll see.

How about Haibike? Im specifically looking one of those. They seem like a reliable kraut manufacturer. But no matter how well its made, longterm it cant be 100% reliable since its a complex system, Im pretty sure many e mtb will have major problems with electrics soon.

One more thing, if I go for bb drive, Ill definitely wont be running 1x, how much options on that kind of drives is regarding crank switching, for instance to 2x or 3x?

Haibike has been around for a while I think.

Ebikes are actually not a complex system at all. The electronics and wiring are dead simple. battery->Microcontroller (this can be as simple as a single chip)->ESC (controls the speed of the motor based on instructions from the microcontroller) typically consists of nothing more complicated than an H-bridge, which is just a few MOSFETs, and a DC brushless motor.

That's it. Very few components. All solid-state, extremely resistant to corrosion, heat, cold, and pretty much everything else. The most common failure point is the MOSFETS, which can overheat and self-destruct if they are not of appropriate amp rating. I would expect to see something like this happen occasionally with the chinkbikes, but it should never happen to a decently specced ESC unless you hack the bike to go out of spec - which is a thing that people do.

There aren't a lot of options for motors that let you run a double or triple chainring. Yamaha motors can. I dunno what else can. If it is really that important to you - and I think it should be - you may be stuck running a hub motor instead of a mid-drive.

A lot of Bosch style motors seems to be 1x only and have that idiotic small chainring on the front. Buying a pic rel is genuine boomer tier, imagine cracking a frame and being left with all those proprietary parts, or messing up the bb motor after which you want to install a non electric crank and you just cant - that I want to avoid as much as possible.

In mtb 1x is standard, but you have options of doing it the proper way post OEM, however with a bb edrive, the need for less sprockets on the back and wider chains is enhanced since motor creates massive torque. Not that many options for a rear hub drive out there and bb drive seems to be a more driving friendly option.

thanks, but haibike is my go to since im in europe. Only reason Im considering a rear hub drive is due to modularity, shame that they are over-proprietizing the bb drive. I simply like the idea of an ebike being a bicycle+electric assist, instead of it trying to become a moped.
