The Soviet side of things is that they basically looked at it and said "wait, wouldn't it be easier to transport the fuel to a LARGER facility, where it also feeds the residents, and the extra % effiency of such a huge power plant, instead of trying to maintain fuel depos for the train?"
And then they looked again, and realize there was also maintenance cost savings.
What I don't get, is why nobody has rolled out BEV for trains at a large scale yet. You could have power lines where its convenient, maybe for a few specific uphill areas, but you get to run the entire wasteland nobody wants to install powerlines with battery.
Operation losses with batteries is non existing compared to diesel.
