Investing in a repair stand is a good quality of life improvment if you're serious about doing your own maintenance.

oh yeah and get a good stand. the minoura rs-5000 stand that riv sells is awesome if you have limited space or want something portable

Don't worry about buying a stand, just flip it over. Unless you need to remove the fork for some reason a stand is unnecessary.

park tool make good informational videos for maintenance
just ignore the specialist tools as much as you can (aside from stuff for bearing adjustment and crank extraction)
there are ways to do the same job without such tools, its just much harder

Depends on how much it would cost to fix and if you're currently satisfied with the bike.
If the repair costs exceed what you believe the bike to be worth and you have no sort of sentimental attachment to it then you should probably just get a new bike if you can afford one.

but it works better for leaning and your pocket if you have access to a community bike repair collective, or not-for-profit bicycle recycling and DIY shop.
I get used bike cables for $0.75, gear sets for $5, brake pads for $1 etc....

they won't last as long as new, but then you get to learn more about repairing your bike and its still cheaper.
Plus I can use their tools and stands for $2.50 / half hour.

You can learn very basic shit from the internet. When more complicated problems occur, go to a bike shop and learn. You'll need tools and patience. A lot of trial-and-error. Also avoid GCN like the plague, that's youtube-level shit.

It's a pretty specific and rare kind of bike shop that is willing to teach customers.
Nothing on a bicycle is a particularly skilled job either, except for truing wheels.
the difficulty is just in doing jobs to a high standard or quickly.
