They are very slow AND they don't go when you want them to go so you gotta wait for them to arrive. As another anon said between public transport and personal transport they combine the worst of both worlds.
It's basically garbage, in my city the routes are very inefficient because they want to cover as many stations as possible.

For my commute I need around 30 minutes by bike, 25-30 minutes by car depending on the lights and I'd need about 45-50 minutes by bus.

For example when you have luggage.
For a long time I regularly walked to the train station for about 30 minutes, since there was no bus service.
Now there is a bus. It's not that much faster, since it first goes all around town, but with luggage it's a godsend.
Also when it's raining cats and dogs, or the sun is burning everything in its sight.

You don't fucking use buses for long trips.
That's what trains (and planes) are for.
The actual advantage of the car is on the last few meters from origin and to destination.
In between private cars are inferior to public transit by all measures. They can't hope to compete.
The US problem is, that due to public transit practically only being a thing in the big cities, the general public thinks it's full of niggers, beggars and criminals - even though that's only "big US city drip".
It also usually doesn't work without public money, and that's "communism" to you.

I feel the image you have posted, though. Democrats are probably in for a surprise early November.

Park and ride is the only real buses that make sense in most American cities. Take you straight downtown and then you can walk/local bus from there. Most places take 2+ hours to get across town when you stop every block.

1st & foremost it's the iron/steel bars meant for holding. These are rather dirty. I have seen people sticking their fingers into their ears, nose, & teeth & hold these bars just after.

Then comes the tightly packed seats, getting sweat on yourself in hot weather from other people.

The true fun begins in a crowded bus. When people start leaning on you regardless of if you're sitting or standing.

Buses are almost always based on seating. Sitting for long periods of time is very unhealthy & can hurt if in cheaply made seats.

A bus travels on roads. Roads are not nice straight tracks or open air. Roads are not always flat & can have bumps & holes. Roads include all of that stopping & starting. Roads can be on hills. Lots of up & down hills in a vehicle which tends to have poor suspension. Roads have traffic. Roads have other buses that impact the travel of your bus. Roads have drivers that don't care about other drivers & cut off your bus & make the bus get delayed 10 minutes so that you miss the transfer & have to wait 30 extra minutes. In short, buses have to compete with other drivers.

The workers are underpaid which gives them little motive to keep things clean beyond the minimum.

Well, planners in Europe do their best to avoid shit like that happening.
You can't simply build a house wherever you feel like it. The municipality needs to have designated the lot for housing (specifically the type of house you want to build), and usually has prepared the infrastructure for it (including public transit).
Exactly to prevent stupid shit like that from happening.
Whenever I see those US single family house residential areas with exactly the same houses next to each other spread out over several square miles, I'm left wondering what the fuck Americans are thinking.

Aren't those just combining the disadvantages of a bus (very bumpy ride) with the disadvantages of a tram (high infrastructure costs and low flexibility)?
Certainly better than battery busses, though.
Maybe a combination could help. Have a trolleybus with a battery to bridge gaps in the infrastructure. Although you'd also need to make the connection to the overhead line without human intervention required then. It's not like the driver could always jump off and on again, since that would massively increase travel times.

Most of these problems are caused by people refusing to use buses and making them more expensive to operate both directly by underfunding the public transit system, and indirectly by clogging the roads with more cars than are necessary. Every person driving a car who could be riding a bus makes the commute worse both for bus riders and for drivers that aren't serviced by bus routes.
