I'm going to make a prediction. In 5 years mainstream fredquipment is going to be 1x only regardless of discipline. Why?
Because Campy just jumped on the gravel bandwagon and is about to release a 1x13 group with a 9-xx cassette. Among those options is a 9-36, 400% range, closely spaced ratios, 400% range.
It is a matter of one rainy afternoon for someone to consider that they no longer need an FD, because they can get silly-high gears and range off that cassette alone. On the road. Others will follow.
Knowing the history - SRAM is going to jump that trend in 2 years tops, shimano will follow with dura-ace 2025 and the history of what happend in the MTB will repeat.
