So MetroLink (Los Angeles commuter rail) wants to connect directly to Brightline’s Vegas high speed rail route.
I was skeptical of this route before but this seems solid. This is a model we could export to other American cities.

It's a boogeyman. The primary reason transit fails is because it is TOO EXPENSIVE.

Telecommuting costs less than building mass transit and decreases carbon emissions more.

CHSRA bumped back their Pacheco Pass segment two years to accommodate this, specifically major trackwork between Burbank and LAUS to facilitate this. LACMTA would pay for the Palmdale-Victorville expansion while CHSRA bonds pay for the rest. However, this means CHSRA is out of money when they need it the most to build tunnels, so expect another gas tax/transportation tax deal in the next two years.

Meanwhile, up north integration work is starting with the San Joaquins and CHSRA's new Right-Of-Way - before any CHSRA track is put down the SJJPA is already planning for a Merced station that ties their tracks (and 10+ new ACE commuter stations) into the system. Electrification will only happen after Pacheco is built, as the legislature refuses to allow two noncontinuous 25kV segments in the Bay Area and Central Valley.

It's a backwards way of doing things but it does work.

In that case people wouldn't drive either, however this still happens and will happen to a large degree again after the pandemic. Coronavirius isn't permanent, and it's long-term affects are against retail anyway instead of big tech offices that already bought satellite campuses too. And this says nothing of normal "essential" work eg industrial or medicine-related jobs that require physical humans to share a physical space.

You could say exactly the same thing about flying between cities and yet tons of people do that. Vegas is also a special case in that all of its main tourist attractions are clustered into one small area that you can get around without a car, and this line is obviously intended for people who are visiting Vegas from other places rather than the other way around.
