What are your thoughts on buying a bike off craigslist that you’re 90% sure is stolen?
This guy in my city has several listings for gently used bikes of different sizes, and there’s no way he owns all of them.
OTOH I’m having a damn hard time finding a decent road bike under $1100.

I wouldn't, the majority of bikes have serial numbers on them and most LBS perform a serial lookup on every bike rolling into their shop. If it comes up as stolen on the bike registry, kiss that bike goodbye

1. If he gets busted and they make him tell them everyone he sold stolen bikes to, you're on the hook for receiving stolen property whether you knew or not.
2. Someone like that isn't going to let you really examine the bike carefully anyway for damage or wear, they're going to pressure you to just fork over the money and get lost.
3. They might even just rob you outright.
4. They might sell you the bike then steal it back from you again to sell to someone else. Who knows?
5. Regardless if you think it's stolen, DON'T. Report the ad to Craigslist. People who steal personal property like that are assholes and shouldn't be encouraged.

This isn't a thing. Serial numbers are registered with the company (ex: Trek, Giant) when you purchase a bike. Bike shops only have access to a database of serial numbers for bike they have sold. If you take the bike back to the specific store that sold the bike and the original purchaser reported it as stolen, then you *may* be screwed depending on the employee/store. Source: I work at a bike shop.

It's really not uncommon for people(boomer men) to sell bikes on c-list that they scrounged up from garage sales or the alley or wherever. Are they all really nice road bikes or something?

Some guy at college tried to accuse me of stealing his bike once. He said the bike parked outside was his, and was being really obnoxious about it. I got the bike at a local shop, and while I didn't have the receipt with me I had the transaction on my bank app. I showed that to the officer and everything was fine. He .later went to the bike shop and confirmed the bike wasn't stolen.
Point of the story is don't get stolen shit. If you think it's stolen, at least make sure it's from a shop instead of a random guy. If it had been some dude instead of a bike shop I'm 100% sure it would be worse if the bike had been stolen. This retard was trying to claim my bike as his, and the same could happen to you.

yeah come to think of it I see a lot of really nice road bikes on craigslist from the 70s and 80s selling for like 100 bucks. If I didnt already have 4 bicycles Id buy them all but then id have like 80 bikes cause that is how often I see them online.

Don't buy a stolen bike. Expect to see a receipt from the bike shop. Genuine people IRL sell their bikes all the time for cheap.

if nobody bought bikes that they knew were stolen, took 5 minutes to make sure they weren't stolen, bike theft wouldn't be such a problem.

also cops are useless and will not look for your stolen bike. if they do bust the guy, the cops will just take the bike and sell it at the police auction, they are literally as bad as the thief
