No, they'll train you if you pass the entrance exam. Usually you just need a high school diploma and a driver's license to qualify. Just check on the career section of the railway websites.

The conductor is responsible for the entire train. They're responsible for inspecting the cars, assembling and dismantling the train at yards and sidings, operating switches, doing paperwork and reading train orders, communicating with rail control, etc.

They don't actually drive the train, that's the responsibility of the engineer.

If anything I think the conductor's job will probably stick around longer than the engineer's. Automating the actual driving of the train is relatively straightforward, but it's a lot harder to replace human crew for stuff like >>1542438 mentions.

It depends on the circumstances. If you're a highschool grad you have a 50/50 shot if you don't bitch about the hours, even now despite all the people being idled due to covid if you're willing to work 12am to 12pm they can find a space for you somewhere. Vets have better chances. College grads with something useful ie electrical or mechanical engineering will find work, if not get put on salaried work inside the shop.

When I was little I wanted to operate steam locomotives, of course I grew up, learned more about railroads, the fate of steam and all that.

This. Anything that could possibly be constructed as fun or pride-enabling has been stripped out or prohibited by rules. Compared to years ago, the real wages are lower. It's not worth it

This would have to be the 19th century in America, in the days when link-and-pin couplers and other primitive gear mangled countless hands and bodies. The invention of knuckle couplers and air brakes, as well as union rights won in the epic strikes of 1877 and 1894, reduced the mayhem to a large degree.
For me as an old time steam era foamer I can see that as the golden years but to live and work in that environment is another matter.

I guess what I was describing would be more the Iron Age of steam, with all those 4-4-0s in the U.S. Steam in the last few decades was truly golden and the fact that it coexisted with first generation diesel powered streamliners, and there was streamlined steam, makes it even more golden.
