Chainrings last longer because they're thicker than cassette cogs and have way more teeth to distribute the force. You'll probably go through several cassettes before you have to worry about replacing chainrings.

Baisically I'm lazy and an extreme cheapskate, I would use "oh, there's a real bargain on those brakes" as an excuse to get out of home and go halfway across the city to fetch them. Also I had no tools or skills to do anything with so the process was frequently interrupted by me having to acquire them. Wheel building alone took almost a week.
