Why didnt NYC just build an elevated train for the 2nd Ave Subway?

Its literally taken 50+ years to build this and its gonna cost nearly 10 billion dollars when done.

Why not build a new elevated Line?

Elevated trains dont have to be ugly anymore. They can easily blend into the local environment. Far cheaper to build. Takes much less time and is far easier to build as well.

The Second Avenue was supposed to step in for the Third Avenue Elevated and was planned even before the el came down. I don’t know if people would accept a new elevated, even some of the modern supposedly quiet ones some anons above are touting.
Nothing’s getting built because the political will is lacking. Without some kind of subway Robert Moses I don’t expect much, especially as the economy unravels.

However, periods of economic contraction like recessions are ideal times to build and rebuild infrastructure because their main costs--labor, materials, and property acquisition--are low.

I’m a pessimist but I also agree that now would be the time to do something, which is why I wished for a pro-transit Robert Moses type figure. Boatloads of New Deal bucks poured into the NYC region during the depression and he used a lot of that in good things like parks as well as some debatable highway projects. It was only after WWII that he did the really evil shit.
Some kind of czar under any kind of economic or political system that could finish the 2nd Ave. subway and build/repair the old Pennsylvania RR tunnels under the Hudson would get my support.

This. In any city modern light rail systems trams are more dangerous to pedestrians stray walking streets than cars or buses with combustion engines, because trams are less noisy.

I also suspect an elevated would still be a boondoggle because all the factors that applied to the cost and schedule overruns of the 2nd Ave subway as it exists now would also apply to an elevated:

Its ugly and the wealthy people on the upper east do not want an elevated line. That was one of the reasons why the third ave line was taken down. I have internal sources that say the line will not be "complete" until the 2040s if ever.
